I figured this is better placed here than in "other sports," as really only Vancouverites will care. Speculation that the province will kick in some money to convert BC Place to a retractable, and ideally get the Whitecaps into MLS.

New roof for BC Place may be announced tomorrow
The Premier has called a news conference for tomorrow morning and it’s believed he will talk about the government's choice for a new roof on BC Place stadium.
...
Both the BC Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps have been invited to tomorrow's news conference.
The Lions say they have no idea what it's about.
Last week the Whitecaps told CKNW they’d consider playing in BC Place with a new retractable roof if it would improve their chances of landing a Major League Soccer franchise.
...
It is also possible the Premier will announce a project to build a retractable roof, but that would happen after the Olympic Games are complete. |

Whitecaps still want their dream venue on the waterfront down at the docks. This is temporary only, but at least it frees up Swangard for community use |

Great news. Cant wait to see the artist's layout. Very suprised to hear that 2010 isnt the target date considering I thought that was the whole point. I heard the stadium in Berlin is the blueprint? I hope they give it a complete reno job , new seats , get rid of some if not most of the depressing cement look , and natural grass? nothing to do with the renovation but in general improve security at BC Lions games.. much better than 10 years ago but still too many drunken retards coming in from the biggest trailer park in the world ...Surrey! (Im kiDDIN!!!!... no Im not...I joke my Surrey friends)
I cant believe Swaangard has been home to a minor pro team for 20 years. Its a venue for amatuer sport , its seriously something you would find at a UBC or SFu or a big high school. Beautiful scenic location at Central Park but in terms of practicality its brutal.. the grand stands suck , parking sucks , concessions suck , plumbing sucks , the locker rooms suck , the sight lines suck (its for track and field not soccer/football) , Skytrain is at the opposite end of the park so safety sucks ( its not NY Central Park but I wouldnt let my 10 yr old niece walk through there after a game with her friends alone) , the surrounding fencing is so cheap you can see through it( im serious) , plus its in Burnaby right on the border , literally 100 feet from being on the cool side of town ( East Van),...etc
leave it for amatuer sports. |

Yeah I've always been kind of surprised at how Swangard remains the norm for soccer. What was built in Empire Stadium's stead? (Ah, apparently, ironically, a soccer field!) Was there actually a need to tear it down?
I agree about the sightlines... I've only been to one 86ers game (as they then were), but I remember that as a player moved to the other side of the field from us, he gradually disappeared because of the slight incline, on either side of center.
Apparently Thunderbird Stadium can be expanded to hold more than Swangard does now. Is that any better? _________________

If I may share a quick sentimental story.. its not even my memory. My family when they moved here from Brandon Manitoba in the late 60s , lived next to the PNE grounds , my sister tells a great story of sitting by her window and listening to the Stones and Beatles play live at Empire Stadium frmo her bedroom window
I love that era of pro sports in vancouver(70s) despite being too young to rememebr or appreciate anything. Everything was in the suburbs of east Van on a fair ground with rides and cotton candy ... the Canucks , Leos and Caps plus the Forum(home of the WHL Canucks) and Agridome(eventual home of the high school backetball tournament) were also located on the same property and still standing .. great sports area and great atmosphere in the summer , going to a Leos game with all the rides going and the stadium filling up with the big lights.. I have fond images in my head of that time period...awesome. |

That's pretty sweet with the scoreboard up there without a roof above it. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Taking a page out of Montreal's Olympic Stadium more than the Skydome or Safeco style of roof... looks pretty neat, but I'll bet it will tear regularly. It still looks very covered, even when open, though. Or wait... there are conflicting pictures -- does the roof bunch up at the center, or get pulled back to the sides?
I'm glad that the exterior will be remodeled, but I hope it's a little less cheezy than the picture...
The suspended scoreboard is trippy. _________________

| also interesting to note , the olympic banner/design that surrounds the top rim , is that vertical or is it part of the dome caz if its vertical , looks like they're literally raising the roof |

That looks cool... I just saw a History Channel show about the Coliseum in Rome, and apparently, back in the day, they had a retractable roof that looked like this; it required the Roman Navy to operate the series of pulleys and sails that effectively made the roof retractable... _________________ ... I think it's stupid. Pour the money into helping build a dual soccer and football stadium, blow up the dome, and build a bunch of lucrative condos you can tax the shit out of on the site.
Also spend some money on the Nat damnit!!! |

no way, if they can renovate that stadium for 200 mill and not cost taxpayers and dime AND make it last another 25-30 years, im all for it. that Dome is great in the city! I think kerfoot should just give the big old fuck you to the city of vancouver and leave the stadium idea be for a few more years, their lease with BC place ends in 2016, so hes got time to let the real estate value drop
and Nat Baily is being renovated |

For those curious, the renovated '20s era Waldstadion in Frankfurt has a similar design:

So now that it'll look like a toilet seat, will they be seeking corporate sponsorships from Kohler and American Standard? _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Well, going to see the Lions "down at the Bowl" does have a football ring to it. _________________
