From the time 11 days ago when Nonis talked to St. Louis Blues president John Davidson in Calgary, where the hockey world gathered for Ed Chynoweth's funeral, the Blues have been the most appealing option for Nonis.
Nonis followed that up with an interview last weekend with Blues chairman Dave Checketts in New York, where the ex-Canuck boss passed the sniff test easily enough that the St. Louis job is probably his if he wants it.
Pleau, the current general manager, is transitioning towards retirement and sadly will be devoting much of his time next season to his wife Wendy, who has cancer. The idea is that Nonis would assume a secondary managerial role for two seasons, then become the Blues' GM in 2010.
It's a pretty good scenario, and Nonis is taking the weekend at home in Point Roberts to discuss it with his wife Susan and 12-year-old son Nick.
"A lot of it is who you're working with, who you're working for," Nonis told TEAM radio Thursday morning after three days of meetings in Toronto with the Maple Leafs. "A real big part for me will be my family situation.
"We all want to work. We want to be part of the game. But the one thing that comes through pretty clear for me, especially in the last month, is your family situation. You spend a lot of time at this game, and there are lots of times where you're neglecting people. The biggest part for me ... will be [working] in a city where my family will be happy."
The lure of the Blues is that the GM's job is guaranteed. It won't be in Toronto. The drawback is the Blues want Nonis to wait. |
Messier and Mogilny I could see, but even a Burnaby kid is living in Point Roberts? _________________

Um...Point Roberts? Fill the Foreigner in please.
Anywho, why is this job more appealing than Toronto? Why would Davidson relinquish his current de-facto GM duties now? Silly as it sounds, Nonis would have more control in Toronto...if only for one year. |

Point Roberts is this tiny bit of land south of the 49th parallel, essentially in the Vancouver suburbs, but in the State of Washington. There is no way to get to it on land except through British Columbia. Even then, I think pretty much no one arrives by boat.

Even though the U.S. apparently had no trouble giving up half of Vancouver Island (much of which is also below the 49th parallel, including Victoria), for whatever reason Point Roberts had to stay. (Teddy Roosevelt even visited it, apparently).
So its ENTIRE raison d'être is basically tax avoidance by Canadians who live there, and commute to work in Vancouver. You can also get a PO Box there and have U.S.-address-only deliveries sent there. (Which reveals the stupidity behind U.S.-address-only deliveries, since you have to cut through foreign territory to get there).
