Quote:
Wings coach Mike Babcock said he has been pleased with rookie Darren Helm, who has played nine NHL games, regular season and playoffs, including the last two against the Predators.

"I just look at the more depth we can have, the better off we are," Babcock said. "As much as we'd all like to think the ice is great in the NHL, the buildings are hot, hot, hot. The ice deteriorates. It's harder to skate. The less minutes you can play your top guys, to keep them fresher, that's better. That means more minutes for the fourth line and if they can be productive, that's great. If they can't be productive, you can't put them on the ice.

"If Helm can continue to grow with confidence ... as you saw, defensively, he can earn 10 minutes a night."

More Helm love:

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2008/04/rookie_helm_filling_playoff_ro.html

Dude might be ready for a full time gig next year, except that Detroit typically likes to keep guys in the minors until they absolutely know they're ready to play, or they run out of waiver-excemptions. The offseason should be interesting to see if anyone gets moved because of the push from the young guys, and training camp should be interesting to see what young dudes from the farm stick with the team...

More love for Helm

Quote:
Darren Helm is your classic Detroit Red Wings diamond-in-the-rough.

Late pick. Drafted higher than projected. Emerged quietly and quickly. Exceeded expectations. Plays in the National Hockey League.

Helm, who spent most of the season with in the American Hockey League, is skating regularly in the NHL playoffs, having appeared in six games with the Red Wings. He has an assist and is averaging 8:07 of ice time.

It’s clear he’ll meet the Red Wings’ projection for him — a third- or fourth-line checker — but with his blazing speed and underrated set of hands, he could one day squeeze his way onto a scoring line.

The 6-foot, 182-pound Helm is only three years removed from being picked 132nd overall in 2005, and has surpassed Jakub Kindl (19th), Justin Abdelkader (42nd), Christofer Lofberg (80th) and Mattias Ritola (103rd).

Gotta love that. A 5th round pick 3 years ago is already up and playing in the playoffs.

We had a 7th round pick from 3 years ago playing on our 2nd line (not to mention a 1st and 2nd rounder from that draft playing). But then again, we're not in the playoffs anymore. Mad

More about Helm's fast rise

Quote:
In an organization where young players are generally brought along slowly, Helm's speed and hockey sense have helped him become an exception to that rule.

It makes me wonder if he'll have a spot on the club next season or if they'll keep him in Grand Rapids playing 20 minutes a night.

Detroit's forward corps next season:

Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Filppula(RFA), Hudler, Samuelsson, Franzen, Draper, Maltby, Cleary, Kopecky. That's 11 roster spots filled for sure. Generally Kenny likes to fill out the ranks with some cheap vet experience, like he did with Drake, Downey, McCarty, Hartigan, and Ellis. I could see the team bringing back Drake. Abbadabbadoo will likely be in Grand Rapids next season unless he has an awesome camp and forces the issue. I don't know if any of the kid forwards aren't waiver-excempt anymore...
