I actually liked the Quantum Leap finale, though it was admittedly bizarre.
I would most definitely count Star Trek: Deep Space Nine among these, a sad and very rushed ending to an otherwise phenomenal (IMO) show. I guess Voyager and Enterprise should be counted as well, but both those shows sucked balls to begin with.
I have a feeling both Battlestar Galactica and LOST will be counted among the crappy-enders. Just way too much hype for them to deliver on.
The best series finale by far IMO was Six Feet Under. Not only did it wrap everything and everyone's story up nice and neatly, it actually did a ton to make up for a bunch of missteps the show had made previously, almost like the writers had it planned all along.
I'm kinda neutral about the Sopranos finale. Meh, I liked the show, but wasn't a gigantic fan. |

What was wrong with the DS9 finale, other than the series was rushed in the final few episodes? Ending-wise I thought it was pitch perfect. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

I really didn't like the final season of DS9. After all-out war finally broke out, the series incredibly got less exciting instead of moreso. Jadzia Dax's death was badly done and Ezri was supremely annoying, albeit cute. And on top of it all they did some of the worst episodes of the entire series...the one with O'Brien's daughter falling through a time portal and coming back as some Tarzan-esque Asian girl was hands-down the worst episode of any sci-fi series I think I've ever seen anywhere, anytime.
But you asked about the series finale. What should have been a soul-searing climactic battle between the Dominion, Captain Sisko, and Gul Dukat, the greatest villain in Trek history, was a ridiculously bad downer. The final, battle was rushed, with footage stolen from Star Trek VI (inexcusable given how good DS9's effects were for every other battle scene). And the final battle between a Dukat with unheard-of power and Sisko was what...a dive off a cliff and a book being burned. That's IT!?!? Rushed doesn't even begin to describe it. Oh, and for a show that did a good job of avoiding cliches, the whole thing with four Cardassians or so storming the palace or whatever...how utterly lame. Captain Sisko deserved a better fate.
Okay, this geek is done talking. If'n anyone has never seen DS9 you should get a few episodes on DVD. It's better than even the best episodes of the original series and Next Generation. Just make sure you watch from the end of season 2 to the beginning of season 7. That's it. Anything else is just mediocre. |

I may be alone here, but found the premise entire premise of DS9 to be counter to the whole Star Trek concept. By that I mean it was (I believe) more interesting when it was about, "exploring strange new, worlds... and going where no man has gone before..." Despite boring characters like Riker, I quite liked STNG and, yes, even Voyager. I think Voyager was a direct response of the passive-aggressive nature of DS9... I mean, how can you explore strange new worlds when you are sitting in a space station? Anyway, with the exception of Jadzia Dax (and who wouldn't want to explore her?) I found DS9 and Sisko kinda dull... Perhaps I didn't watch enough of any episode after the first season... And watching the last (overhyped) ep form DS9 just proved to me that this show was going nowhere fast... It wasn't interesting to watch at all... _________________ ... As for Lost and BSG, I think the former has long ago jumped the shark, while the latter, I would agree with you, is building up to a disappointing conclusion, much like X-Files did. Lost pretty much lost me around the time that they revealed the "Others" as people who lived quite happily on the island for some time and had the ability to come and go as they pleased... Huh? WTF? And why did they insist on appearing to the survivors of Oceanic 816 as ragged ass survivors themselves? And what's with the smoke monsters, polar bears, and the numerology? Sure the Benjamin Linus character is interesting but I'm finding it irritating that no one has gotten tired enough of him to off him when they've had plenty of opportunity to do so...
As for BSG, the original series jumped the shark when they found Earth. It'll be very interesting to see how they do that in the finale or if they leave a cliffhanger ending in the hopes of scoring a major motion picture (a la the X-Files). I hope not. I see that they are already slimming down the cast... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

I thought the final battle Between Dukat and Sisko, despite not being a lengthy or action-packed battle, ended the series the way it always should have: Dukat finally getting his chance to fight his longtime foe one-on-one, and Sisko making the ultimate sacrifice. Sisko essentially dying and going home to the prophets was really fitting. Referring to the ancient book that releases the Pa-Wraiths as "a book" is doing the Bajor story arc (the bulk of the series) a major disservice.
I also liked the idea of the shoe being on the other foot, with the Cardissians being the subjugated people and needing the help of Kira to learn how to start a resistance movement. Garak and Bashir's exchange really encapsulates the dystopian lens of the DS9 series really well.
As for the Dominion, the war was really finished the episode before that.
Terry Farrell didn't exactly give the writers much warning about her departure, if I remember correctly. That's why her death was rushed. I liked Ezri, she was a bit of a goof, but ultimately a useful character because otherwise the crew would have been moping about Jadzia's death even moreso. Her first appearance at the start of season 7 made for two amazing episodes. The Dukat cult episode is also awesome, as are the section 31 episodes.
The crappy O'Brien episode is season 6, episode 24.
The Enterprise finale was lame because they made Riker and Troi the stars and completely relegated the Enterprise crew to mop up duty.
The Voyager finale was rushed far worse than DS9. And if Janeway could go back in time to save the crew, why didn't she go back to an earlier time?
The TNG finale was awesome. Set up for future movies, and gave Q and Picard to go toe-to-toe one more time. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

I was never a trekkie. The only time I watched was when I was flipping through and nothing was on, so I'd hit a Star Trek episode and watch it. I usually liked Next Gen and Voyageur better than DS9, but watching sporadic episodes doesn't lend itself to learning the premise and storylines of each series _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Was it season 6? Whoops, my bad.
I'm going to admit now I was wrong in saying it was one of the worst finales ever, because it really wasn't, it just didn't live up to the lofty expectations I had for this show. From season 3 forward the show simply blew me away nearly every episode, especially season premieres like "Way of the Warrior." Nonetheless, the show just seemed to lose a ton of steam the entire season 7. I did like the final scene though, very simple, but profound.
John, if you gave up on DS9 after season 1, you gave up way too soon. Even TNG took at least 2 seasons before finally hitting the mark consistently.
And as for "exploring," DS9 was the best Trek ever because it explored ideas and characters in ways no other Trek ever did. Roddenberry would NEVER have approved of some of the things that went on in DS9, and that's why I liked it so much. Things like Starfleet officers turning traitor and becoming terrorists, the Federation using a secret and morally ambiguous organization to ensure their utopic existence, and just the very dark and oftentimes violent nature of the show. And pretty much any Trekkie will concur that "The Visitor" was and still is the best episode of ST ever done.
To me, TNG was good, but not great. Most episodes to me were the same, despite the whole "strange new worlds" thing. They get in trouble, Data and Geordi spout off some technobabble, they get out using some SFX, rinse, repeat. Voyager and Enterprise just sucked and never got out of their dull stage.
Lost still hasn't quite jumped the shark IMO, but in a way BSG has. The show has derailed for me big-time now that four characters have been revealed as Cylons. It's almost like the writers have painted themselves into a corner and can't find a way out, and the characterization has suffered as a result. Lost, despite getting more convoluted than an X-Men comic book, is still great dramatic TV. |

In related news, the fallout from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has sparked something of an online campaign to have the expression "jump the shark" replaced by (or at least paired with) "nuking the fridge." _________________

See, if I never saw another ep, I wouldn't be bothered - for me, this show tries to create more mysteries without explaining the wherefores and whys of the existing ones... To me, this show's writers have long ago painted themselves into a corner from which they can't get out... So now, they've also started to paint the walls, ceilings, furniture,...

Maybe I'm just waiting for another Six-on-Six kiss scene. How can you say they've jumped the shark when they reveal the Cylon babes this way? Wait - don't answer that...
Actually, I've heard exactly that... That in a way, Moore and co. have deliberately painted themselves in to set up the mother-of-all-finales... Which of course means they'll blow it...

Nah. It's just bad storytelling in the guise of drama.
Heroes is the show I am loathe to delete on my DVR. And this upcoming season's theme of Villains is one I am very eagerly anticipating... If you hadn't heard, the last season or two, they've been revealing the Heroes and their backstories; this season, they'll be introducing new characters who will no doubt ally with Sylar and others (Mama Petrelli, too, is my guess). I need to pinch my pennies and pick up a Blu-Ray player eventually so I can get the last couple of seasons in HD. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

These ladies are Cylons?
I can't wait to pick up the full series when it comes out on DVD. I couldn't follow the Canadian broadcast times, so I decided early I would just buy the whole series when they release the full package and I'll watch it then. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV.
