It will be played in January, between the Wings and Hawks. There are still not sure if it will be at Wrigley or Soldier Field.

Not even close to as cold as it was for the outdoor game in Edmonton.

Oops...yeah I forgot about the one Crosby played in. Embarassed I meant that Edmonton game with Theo sporting the Habs toque. That looked ridiculously cold.

And the site?

It may just be Wrigley Field!

TSN wrote:

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will play at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day in the league's second outdoor Winter Classic.

According to the report, the game was finally approved last week when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman met with the Hawks, Cubs and Mayor Richard Daley.

The NHL has said that an official announcement likely won't be made until closer to the time the 2008-09 season schedule is released, likely in mid-July.

And it'll likely be Chicago vs. Detroit. Which would be awesome.

Heh, TSN has updated their wording to explain why this isn't the third outdoor classic per se:

Quote:
The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will play at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day in the league's second Winter Classic. Montreal and Edmonton participated in the Heritage Classic, the NHL's first outdoor game, back in 2003.

The more I think about it... New Year's in Chicago would be pretty kickass.

little off topic

i was reading an article in Maxim magazine, they mentioned something about the last possible game in the Old Yankee stadium would be the Rangers vs Someone.

If that happens in 2009-2010, im freaking there!

The Yankee Stadium outdoor game didn't work out apparently. It was supposed to be this year's Outdoor Classic, but I can't see Yankee Stadium remaining dormant for a full year before the NHL comes in to close it.

NHL.com wrote:

Jan. 1, 2009 figures to be another historic day for the venerable old ballpark when it opens its doors to the National Hockey League for NHL Winter Classic 2009, which this time features an Original Six matchup.

The host Chicago Blackhawks will square off against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Detroit Red Wings, in a 1 p.m. ET game that should not only capture the attention of the entire sports nation on arguably the greatest sports television day of the year, but could also be a key contest in what figures to be a tight Central Division race. It will be the 701st all-time meeting of the clubs. No NHL opponents have played more regular-season games against each other.

Didn't know that Chicago/Detroit had the regular season games played record. I know Montreal/Boston has the all time games played record, but as long as Chicago and Detroit stay in the same division then I guess this will not be reached.
