www.mozy.com
best investment ive made in computer backups. I transferreed over 100 gigs of data to the server, reformated my computer, and transferred it all back, and i still have the backup on the mozy server.
the only downside of it, if you upload something to their server, and you delete it off your computer, after 30 days mozy will delete it as well. so its basically a mirror of your HD over a 30 day period! |

Let me share/rant about my old Dell....I hate Dell!. funny you mention this , I just read an article over the weekend from PC World on the top 10 worst PCs of all time and the Dell Dim 4600(year 2003) was ranked 10 , the only modern pc(post 2000) to crack the list. I felt so vindicated caz I purchased a 2003 Dell Dim 4550(same shit..one model lower) and I have ranted many times on how its the most horrible PC ever. Me and ol K-Town bought the exact same model , we discussed our hate a couple times.

So now the Dell tech is trying to sell me an 80GB external HD as a second backup... $65 after mail in rebate... Sounds expensive given that I can get a 500GB USB for around $100. |
One of my critiques was the exclusive Dell power supply for the Dim 4500 series , in which they purposely place a PSU with minimal power so if I added or upgraded something like a video card , my pc would overload and shutdown(which happened) and I would have to send it in. Force me to buy their PSUs. At the time they were selling generic Dell 300W PSU for $100 US. Luckily through some research through their public forums(which I recommmend for tech support) , the only thing exclusive is the mounting screws so I could buy a regular ATX PSU and mod the Dell case.. which I did. I bought a cheap 350W PSU for $30 and hacked the Dell case (and hacked my warranty lol)... viola... no need for the exclusive Dell PSU and my PC worked perfect...no need to send it in for "tech analysis" and over pay for pile of crap hardware.
That was just one of many instances of my Dell from Hell... but the blessing in disguise is I discovered i really enjoyed the tech side of it and had fun fixing , modding things myself.. discovered a new hobby because of this pile of Dell shit. So I cant be too mad at Dell.. but I hate them still.
update on my project.. Im not building the media PC anymore ,Im gonna look at a PS3 next fall instead. Im still curious about building a PC MAC. |

Well now the Dell tech says I need to disconnect the WLAN mini card and re-install the device driver for it since it seems to be acting up - bear in mind this is a frigging NOTEBOOK! And i also found out 2Gb is the most this notebook can take...
If nothing else, this whole escapade has taught me that it's not really that hard to set these things up - unfortunately, it's even easier to screw them up!
Luvah, isn't it interesting that we're talking about modding PCs... 30 years ago, people were spending their disposable income on better stereo hi-fi equipment and souping up cars... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

I still remember I bought my brother's Blaupunkt Dallas ( remember they were modelled after american cities.. are they still?)... dreaming of high powered amps and 12" woofers to pound " we like the cars , the cars that go boom!".. ultimate boom car song.
My buddies in high school were really into car audio and modding their beaters into cheap ghetto boom cars. There was a time when planning to mix a tape and actually mixing a tape meant something , wasnt this downloading 1000s songs at the tip of your finger. You had to plan a tape that when you press play the order of songs would take you on a cruising journey! I actually still use my 20 year old Paradigm home speakers... it does pay off to invest into quality for home audio! lol
yeah , PC modding is afforadble now too. I was actually somewhat into it in the early 90s , I had a 486 40MHZ PC that I was pumped for ... me and my buddies were planning on buying one of those new $200-300 audio cards that allow stereo sound! ... and of course late 90s , spending 900$ for a 4X CD burner! lol.. my last stupid purchase was my Sony DVD burner for $700 at cost for my Dell from Hell. prices and tech advancements turned me off for a decade... now its very affordable in comparison to the past. |

Turned on my computer yesterday. After litrerally 5 seconds, it shut off. Tried again a few times. It booted into Windows once and then died. No light on the MB. Gotta be the Power Supply.
Went and picked up an open box PS so if it wasn't the PS I could return the thing without having to pay a 15% re-stock fee.
Brought it home and installed it. Booted up. Wouldn't boot. WTF? Tried again. And again. Finally it went into Windows. After a couple of minutes:
What the fuck is this shit? A new blue screen of death?
Well, I put in the XP CD and re-start. Do a chkdsk. Tells me the boot sector is corrupt. Try to do a format of the drive and re-install. No fucking dice. Try to create a new boot partition using that disk troubleshooter thing. No fucking luck.
Try to install Windows on my 320GB drive. "Disk Read Error". Gee, thanks for the useful fucking information.
Try to install on my 80GB IDE drive. Hey! It works!
Get it installed on the 80 and boot up. Install a bunch of drivers. Turn on my cable modem. Start with some Windows updates. BAM!
Fuck you Microsoft. FUCK you. I better not have 2 goddam fucking hard drives with corrupted boot sectors. I'm down to a 40GB drive that I have Fedora 5 installed on.
Reboot. Boot up in Safe Mode. Stuck at loading mup.sys. Couldn't get any further than that last night and went to bed. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Disconnected the hard drive(36GB Raptor) with the boot sector corrupted. Comp boots up fine.
Anyone ever RMA'd a hard drive before?
Now, do I want this PS or bring it back and get a different one... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

first, download the latest version hardy heron (version 8.04) It's a long term support (3 years of updates so you don't need to reinstall the new version every 6 months)
better yet, use linux mint 5
Then, reboot your computer using the live cd.
click the install icon.
usually a guided install will leave your xp alone. Follow the steps that the guided install says, or if you do a manual partitioning, google, dual boot xp and linux and there are several well written guides out there.
if dual booting with vista, make sure to put GRUB - the bootloader - on the same partition as the root (where you put ubuntu / mint) not the boot sector of your hard disk as vista doesn't play well with grub. You can still dual boot with vista (I am)
It's easy as cake. then you can add cool desktop effects too! _________________ www.jimdalling.com |
