No McCarty or Maltby? I guess Maltby does have 2 years left and at 35 isn't really old, but he has declined in importance for a while.
Draper's signed until he's 39? Jay-zus.
As for their D... I know they expect Ericsson to be a full-time guy next year. Not bad for the last overall pick in 2002. I don't know their long term plans for Meech. Quincey and Kindl will most definitely be back in the AHL. Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall and Lebda are back for sure, and if you add Ericcson and Meech to that mix there is room for definitely one of the 3 UFA's to be brought back (Stuart, Chelios, and Lilja). It's just whether they want a #4/5 guy long term like Stuart or a #6/7 guy with incredible intangibles like Chelios.
I also expect Aaron Downey played his last hockey this year. I remember he was very close to retiring last summer. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Well, he did say he could only talk with 3 of them
He has declined in importance, but Maltby can still be effective in a limited role. True, we might have some younger guys who may be able to step in, but Detroit will always go with veteran experience if the kids are able to stay in Grand Rapids and don't have to clear waivers to come up. Which leads me to believe that Helm may start the year in Grand Rapids...
Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Franzen, Filppula, Samuelsson, Cleary, Hudler, Draper, Maltby, Kopecky. That's a tough nut to crack. We'll see if they round that out with vets or kids. They always want the kids playing.
Which leads us to the D. I don't know what Ericsson's waiver options are. If he doesn't have to clear, I imagine he starts in GR unless he really forces the issue in training camp. He might be close.
Meech was out of waiver exemption this year. I imagine Quincey's exemption will be next season, which means he stays up as depth, or gets dealt...
I think we'll see some movement by Detroit at the draft.
Detroit has 39 committed to next season, with virtually the same lineup. Filppula will probably get a long term deal. Stuart I think they'd like to get signed, hopefully they can get him at a discount. Howard, Quincey and Ericsson are up for new deals but won't be large sums.
Considering that Zetterberg and Franzen will likely add $10 million in payroll starting in 09-10, Detroit will have a lot of free cap space this year that they can't commit to any long-term deals beside Filppula and perhaps Stuart. That's a lot of coin to toss out at a big-time one-year contract. Mats Sundin? Maybe Shanny would return? Teemu Selanne? Demitra? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Didn't realize Quincey already has 3 pro seasons under his belt. Yes, both he and Ericsson lose waiver exemption next year. I guess there will be a decision on which of the 3 young ones (including Meech) they want to keep and maybe they'll trade one of them, or else see if they can sneak one of them into the AHL next year. _________________ "Oh my God. Lebda has about 200+37 PO games under his belt now. I like what he brings, he plays within himself and works hard. He's a decent player on a cheap contract, and is still only 26. They might be willing to part with him if they feel the kids can step in and play his role. Meech has a similar skill set, younger, more size and more offensive upside... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Old balls will be signed the season after he's dead. He'll still be a quality stay at home defenseman. _________________ Thank god the reign of W is about to end. Could a person be more dense? |
