Finally, thumbs up to the NHL's newest great player you might not know. He's tied for the league lead in goals by a defenceman. Two reasons you might not know him, he plays for Washington and his name is Mike Green.

He's not Mike Green, who played briefly with Florida and the Rangers, he's not Josh Green or Matt Greene or Andy Greene or Travis Green.

And Mike Green suffers for being selected in the same draft - in the same first round, mind you -as his much more famous Washington teammate Alex Ovechkin, but those who have taken notice of the Capitals' turnaround under coach Bruce Boudreau are raving about the play of Calgary-born Mike Green and his 10 goals, two of which came yesterday against Ottawa, one against Martin Gerber and one against Ray Emery, but that's another story.

I was going to start this before my Christmas holiday (just got back), but I couldn't find any corresponding YouTube clips of some of his big goals.

I've been one of his biggest boosters and thought he was vastly underrated as a prospect by scouts for the NHL and Team Canada, who left him off the national junior team (mind you, it was a stacked D, but he was easily a top 6 blueliner amongst his peers).

He might've been the best Blade since Wendel Clark.

Another GWG in OT for Green. Unfortunately it was against the Habs. Laughing

Dude should be on the All-Star Team.

Green got his THIRD overtime winner of the season tonight in a 3-2 win over the Rangers... which lifts the Capitals into FIRST PLACE in the Southeast Division.

Kolzig played his 700th game as a Cap as well.

Green just made a nice pass to Backstrom who gave it to Ovechkin who just blew a wrist shot through Lehtonen from inside the circles to tie it up with under 2 minutes left...

Last guy to do that was Niedermayer in 2000.

Didn't realize it before, but Green looks like Niedermayer out there!

Sask, this guy is awesome.

The draft pick that the Caps used on him was from Detroit in the Lang deal Mad Mad

Aaaaaand Mike Green finishes 7th in Norris voting, ahead of Chris Pronger! That's fucking awesome Laughing

Looks like someone decided to give Adrian Dater a vote.

Someone gave Mark Streit a 2nd place vote? They do realize he played forward for half the year, don't they?

Man, what an ass-kicking by Lidstrom, though. I wonder who voted him 4th, though. Laughing

Nice to see Markov get recognition in an off-year for him.

So... just how much is Mike Green worth?

Honestly, I'd throw caution to the wind and consider a 7 year, $42m contract for him.

4 years, $5.25m per is what he gets. These are all RFA years. When the deal is done, he'll be eligible for UFA.
