Sorry, too lazy to find the original thread. May as well start a new one for summer.
Finally getting to the good part of Michael Chrichton's "Timeline." After watching the horrendous movie (Richard Donner, you should be ashamed) I was curious to see if the book was any better. So far, it's vastly superior. I've never really picked up one of Chrichton's books prior to this. |

Fuck, that movie sucks?? Dammit, Timeline is one of my favorite books 
A while back I started to re-read the entire Clancy Jack Ryan timeline. On the second-last one(The Bear and the Dragon). Probably won't read Teeth of the Tiger. I've got a couple of Douglas Coupland books I want to read. And Searching for Bobby Orr. And the Narnia series...And Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and Children of Hurin...
I shouldn't have re-read all the damn Clancy books

Yah, I'm only now starting on "Black Rock" and I'm riveted. The movie departs from the book from the very start, and the whole mystery that unfolds in the book is condensed into about 10 minutes, if at all. Sadly, the movie is actually pretty well cast. |

Finished "Is It Just Me Or Is Everything Shit?". Funny, British, esoteric, the culture of cynicism. An encyclopedic bitch-fest by British journalists Steve Lowe and Alan McArthur. Bathroom reading really.

I'm just finishing up The Bronx is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics and the Battle for the Soul of a City.
It weaves together all the drama happening on the yankees and goes more into depth about the media and political situation than the mini-series did. It talks about the blackout and the Son of Sam too.

In grade 4, Joshua read his favorite battle passage from the Silmarillion to his class. His teacher gave him 96% for English that year in reading, writing and comprehension. It kind of blew away the rest of the class and his teacher!

FINALLY finished "Timeline." Wow...amazing book. Yeah Jeff, avoid that movie like the plague. I understand the need to streamline certain parts of the storyline, but for fuck's sake, the film is so badly done in terms of historical accuracy it's basically watching a bunch of actors fighting their way through the local Renaissance Festival. The best part about the book is that Crichton does his homework--both in terms of the science of time travel and an accurate portrayal of life in the Middle Ages...not only do you believe that it could really happen, if indeed someone had that much money and brainpower on hand, but once they make the jump you feel like you're actually there. Fantastic stuff, and in usual Crichton fashion (this is the first Crichton novel I've read in its entirety but I have perused through Jurassic Park) the ending's real, and not entirely happy.
Not sure what I'll dive into next. We'll see I guess. |

That's always been something that I liked about Crichton. He generally has very good research into what he's talking about in his books. As he should, he is an MD  When you're reading Andromeda Strain and Terminal Man, when he actually wrote them is very surprising...
