Usually I'm knee deep in draft notes this time of year, but business coupled with unimpressive prospects when the Habs intend to pick first means I've been at arms length from the action.

Bob MacKenzie on the other hand, is on the case.

That's not to say I'm clueless. I think Doughty is the best of the young defencemen. This year's draft is definitely D heavy, and other than Stamkos none of the forwards really have breakout potential.

I think if Joe Colborne, John Carlson or Zac Dalpe are available, the Habs will pounce.

As for the Q, I think Yann Sauve is getting the bum's rush from scouts, but toolsy Q D don't have a great track record making the transition to the big leagues. Sauve has size, speed and puck handling skills, but he doesn't hit much and tends to go for the risky pass.

Nic Deschamps isn't really like Patrice Bergeron at all, he doesn't have the hands of Patrice. He'd be a smart pick for a team, although not a flashy homerun type.

Someone is going to draft Patrice Cormier in the second round, and he's a major wildcard. Injuries have inconsistency have been issues, but the guy could be a 30-goal, 100+ PIM guy in time. Was majorly hyped in midget AAA. Personally I think he's worth drafting based on upside.

Maxime Sauve is another safe pick. Could be a second line scoring winger.

Mikhail Stefanovich wasn't great in Quebec this year, but he's one of those enigmatic Russian scorers. Great size and he can score.

We'll trade Feaster Samuelsson, Lebda and Berkhol for the Stamkos pick. And Holland would use it on a D for sure.

I don't really want spoiled rich kid on the Habs (that'd be Colborne, who's dad made $90m in income in 2006). Despite his size he's very soft and due to the money issue, motivation is a huge concern for me.

I think if Gustafsson is still available for the Habs, they might just give him a shot.

Jyri Niemi is being criminally underrated in this draft because of injuries. He's got great wheels, is strong on the puck, makes a good pass, got good size, and he's got the best point shot of the whole draft class. If it weren't for injuries, I'm sure we'd have seen more physical play from him this past year. He has all the tools and someone's going to be very, very lucky to see him slip into the second round if that's what happens.

And needless to say, I'm a Holtby fan. Smile

Apparently tickets are on Craigslist for $125 for the draft, but there are still free passes available for the event.

I've heard this scouting report on Doughty: "Think Bryan Berard but with a lot more D".

I posted my thoughts on what Detroit may do in Razz's draft thread in the Boston forum:
If they trade for a couple of 2nd rounders, I could see them going after 44. Vjateslav Voinov, although a guy like Burlon or Aaron Ness at #40 could interest them because they'll both have a chance to develop longer in NCAA (Burlon is coming from St. Mikes Buzzards, which is where our top pick last year came from, and Ness is coming from US High School).

Sask thinks if they keep their first rounder they might go after Eberle because they've probably seen a lot of him while watching Logan Pyett. It's a possibilty, but Deet hasn't taken a non-defenseman in the first round since '92.

Sadly, the Avs have effectively traded their way out of the first three rounds of this draft, and I think it'll cost them dearly. Some way, somehow, the Avs have GOT to get a friggin' goalie prospect. Of course, they need depth at all positions, but the future in net is beyond laughable...

Two years wasn't that long ago Butch. Or are you just repressing all thoughts of Tlusty due to the uncomfortable warm tinglings he brings you?

Wow, no doubt at all by McKenzie and Maguire in saying that Doughty will definitely play in the NHL next season.

Fuck, shut up Maguire. "Gigantically positive". He'll find an even longer way to say "great" during game broadcasts.
