This has happened before in movies/TV shows. It is definitely annoying that Myers, who is supposedly a huge hockey fan, ignored this detail. Honestly, there's nothing more dramatic than a Game 7 overtime anyways... why'd he do this?

Wasn't there a last-second Cup Finals penalty shot in the masterpiece Sudden Death as well?
It annoys me that there are always fundamental flaws in hockey movies -- they are hockey movies. You'd think people who have the slightest passing interest in hockey would be behind them. Contemporary hockey goalies are often portrayed in media with 1970s masks, which is another one I don't get.
With the NHL collaborating, you'd think they'd demand at least some level of accuracy.
Not yet having seen the movie (or read the link), I'm going to guess that Justin Timberlake speaks in a Parisian French accent, too, which will annoy me endlessly.
Not to mention that I can't think of an actor who looks and talks less like a hockey player than Romany Malco.
edit: Yep, now that I've clicked on the link, I see that Justin Timberlake indeed looks nothing like no Québécois of his age group that I have ever seen. Again, why always the '70s? It's so weird!

Mike Myers is untalented. That is the primary reason to avoid this Leafs love fest.

I don't like Mike Myers. Never have. Don't care for Jean-Claude Van Dam either, but I DID buy Sudden Death because of the Hockey aspect.
This movie, though, I'll pass on.
I'll just keep watching Miracle on Ice. Over and Over...
