So big ticket forward...Marian Hossa Shocked

He foregoes assloads of dollars in a long-term contract to go for the Cup in Detroit. I have no problems if he wants to come out and bust his sack off for Babbles. He's already got a good defensive game and should fit really went into the lineup.

How Hossa got done

Marian really wanted to play here:
Quote:
Ken Holland said that he had discussions with Marian Hossa's agent Rich Winter yesterday and that the Red Wings made a long-term contract offer. As the day wore on, it became obvious that Hossa was receiving bigger and better offers from other teams.

Holland thought the deal wasn't going get done, in fact calling the thought of Hossa coming to Detroit "a dream world considering our salary cap situation for '09." The Red Wings were looking for a one-year singing to allow for cap space to sign Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen next year. Hossa had reportedly received offers as high as $81 million over nine years (from Edmonton).

But on his way down to Joe Louis Arena this morning, Holland stopped at a Mobil station and got a call from Winter. With Hossa on the other end of the call, Winter told Holland that Hossa was very, very interested in becoming a Red Wing.

Then, Winter said that their side was willing to sing a one-year contract to make the deal happen. Holland said that he was shocked. He later said that this deal happened because of Hossa and his desire to come to Detroit.

The two sides worked out a salary figure that put Hossa just behind Nicklas Lidstrom as the second highest paid Red Wing.

From Hossa's vantage point, the Red Wings give him a strong chance to win a Stanley Cup and the team plays a style that he prefers -- emphasizing two-way forward play and puck-moving defensemen.

Hossa said that he talked with fellow Slovak Tomas Kopecky -- the two are part of a group of Slovak NHLers who work out in Trencin together every summer -- and liked what he heard about Detroit's players and organization.

Both sides said in today's press conference that they hope this will be more than a one-year relationship. Holland said that he'll have a better idea in the middle of next season what the 2009-10 salary cap will be and whether he can work deals with the players he has to sign for that season.

"Hopefully this is a long-term relationship," said Holland of the Hossa/Red Wing marriage. "The hope is we can keep everyone together ... I've got some time now to see what I can do."

"I have never been involved in a deal and seen a player get so excited to take $85 million less than he was offered elsewhere," Hossa's agent Ritch Winter told The Canadian Press, hinting at the Oilers offer. It's almost incomprehensible, even to an agent. But Marian is a special player."

Awesome. Welcome to the fold, Marian.

I never expected to have a "screamie-Oh-My-God" summer, considering our team is pretty good as we stand. But.....when I read this, I said "OH MY GOD!"

I'm stunned to have Hossa on the team...but...do we need him?

C'mon you guys, weigh in on this.

I'm stunned too. Still stunned. I said numerous times that they had the dough this season to go after a bigger-ticket guy, like maybe a Shanny return or Pavol Demitra. Never expected Hossa due to his price tag and the contract length.

Do we need him? Well, we just won the Stanley Cup. We are coming into next season with essentially the same lineup, with guys that are young enough to realistically expect improvement. Hell, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are 30 and 28 respectively, and it's perfectly reasonable to assume that they will continue to get better. However, an injury to one or more of our big stars has derailed our playoff hopes before. We were healthy this season with the exception of the rough patch in February. You can't always expect that. There were also concerns about the consistency of our secondary scoring. This addresses the shit out of that. Hossa's a horse and an elite scoring threat. He's also good on the defensive side of the puck. So while one could argue that we don't need him, he's one of the best players on the market and is not going to impact our ability to lock up Zetterberg and Franzen because he's only on a one year deal. What better way to use some extra cap space.

Small point with all the Hossa-mania going on in Hockeytown right now, but I think the Red Wings have added another good person to their roster. In addition to Hossa being a star player, I've heard all sorts of good things about him off the ice.

A couple of years ago in Traverse City at the prospects camp, I spoke with someone who worked with the Atlanta players (the Thrashers were one of eight teams that sent prospects to the camp). He said that the most difficult Thrasher he had to deal with was Ilya Kovalchuk and that without hesitation the easiest Thrasher to deal with was Hossa.

I've also heard good things about Hossa from Andreas Lilja and Dan Cleary who were his teammates for a short time in Sweden during the lockout season and from Tomas Kopecky, who works out with Hossa in Slovakia during the summer.

Again, the on-ice performance is what matters. But from someone who lingers around the locker room, the Red Wings are a good group of people and I do believe that factored into the decision to pursue Hossa. Well that and 40 goals with strong defense.

The only way I could see this not working is Hossa having to adjust his game to get more points with a little less ice time. I'm pretty sure it'll work out though... Mad

I think you're right, Av. If Hossa wnats to be here as much as the press says he does, he'll adjust to the "Red Wing Way". Quite a few players gave up their "Super-Star" status to play on our team. Hell, even Steve Yzerman changed his game to win a cup.

It will be interesting, to say the least.

He might not even see much of a drop in ice time. He played less minutes/game last year than Zetterberg, and almost exactly the same as Datsyuk. His SHTOI/game is close to what Detroit typically plays Dats and Z for.

That's the beauty of this move. I don't think there will have to be too much adjustment on the part of Hossa. He's already stated that he loves Detroit's style and the puck-moving defensemen that we have. He works hard at both ends, which is where it starts if you want to play in Detroit. The superstar status thing isn't going to be a big deal. Hossa can come here and play his game for a year, and if it works really well Kenny will try to get him signed for longer.

It'll be interesting to see how the line combos play out. Kenny could roll out an insane line with Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Hossa, while giving Holmer 3rd line minutes at even strength. Or he could split up D and Z. There's going to be some fun times this year, that's for sure Very Happy

I've personally found the media depiction of Hossa's defensive game to be grossly overstated, but now that he's in Detroit it probably won't be. Laughing

I've heard that he's good, and can kill penalties, but not elite by any means. Have you heard otherwise? Don't think I've of heard of him being purposely matched up against other team's top scorers because he can shut em down and produce at the same time though.

Thanks, not mine though. I got it through something on RedWingsCorner, which got it from somewhere on HFboards...I didn't want to trace the credit so I just left it out Razz
