Upshall with a meaningless goal in his first game of the year.

Who cares, we survived Philly with no injuries and a clear W.

The Flyers may have undergone some major changes this offseason, but they're a long way to respectability. Plenty of goons filling out that meagre roster.

What a sick pass by Saks to Guillaume.

They've seriously upgraded their top end talent, but it's still a sharp dive after that. As has been noted, a successful team in the NNHL is more of a complete package that can skate quickly and is defensively responsible without clutching and grabbing.

to add to sam's last point:

...or else you're at the whim of your health. Anaheim won the Cup last year simply by avoiding injury and riding a top-heavy lineup.

Apparently not only were Chipchura and Price told to get a place, but so was Grabovski, who was scratched for this game. Shocked

With Sergei Kostitsyn getting 4 points in a game this past weekend, and Lapierre chomping at the bit to get back up, that's quite a statement.

Maybe when Murray gets back he'll be sent to the AHL in exchange for Max. I don't know. I still think we need him.

Lapierre? Yeah - so do I. Based on his play, I don't understand why he's in the AHL. As far as S.K., I think he's just part of the numbers game right now. I'm betting that Ryder won't be a part of this team next year, and maybe this year. He's just keeping S.K. spot on the bench warm.

E.L. - exactly. Gainey and Timmins have anticipated the NNHL pretty well so far.

And they booed Daniel Briere, the Flyers' French-Canadian star who passed up Montreal's six-year offer to take an eight-year deal with the Flyers this summer, every time he touched the puck.

"That was awesome," the Canadiens Finnish captain said of the crowd. "They've shown so many times over the years that they're for us and for me. "It really felt good. We talked about (the French message) even before this whole controversy. We did it about a week or 10 days ago. I guess it was a good time to put it out there."

He really dogged it in preseason. I'm glad we humbled the kid a bit, but he knows if he keeps playing well we'll bring him back, and that's just as important for his confidence.

Our surplus of forwards is a good problem to have, I think. Just as long as everyone gets a fair shot.

And Saku personifies class. Gainey and Carbo need to keep the shitstarters out of the dressing room, because our players deserve better, and they always handle it better than any of us ever could.

During the RDS broadcast, noted Yankee Tom Kostopolous attempted to do an interview in french (he knows a few words and undersood the questions). Everyone is doing their part.

Kostopolous is from Mississauga. Smolinski is the Yankee we acquired over the summer. Yeah, I know he tried to do some French in a training camp press conference. That's cool.

For some reason I always thought he was a Massachusetts boy - I substituted one hard to spell place for another.

Didn't know that - then yeah - he hasn't done nearly enough to expect a spot on the big club. It sends a strong message to the kids that the key to making the club is work ethic - a trait that has been lacking in recent years.

I wanted Gorges to sit this one, but given Carbo's advice, I'm generally happy. He seems to be communicating better and he also seems to see something in Gorges. Communicating the ups and downs of NHL life is much better than sending him to the press box (as I wanted) for any and every mistake. Good on him (Carbo)

The next test against Toronto will be very interesting. Toronto has a habit of lifting their game both physically and talent-wise. I haven't seen this with Montreal for awhile.

To sit Gorges he'd have to switch Dandy back to D since Bouillon is still out, and play all his rookie forwards. He only seems comfortable having 7 possible d-men dressed, with 1 as a forward. Gorges played very solid tonight. I think it's a bad message to have one bad play and you're out.

I guess Koivu should introduce players in Finnish next game.
