I barely remember a pre-Jagr NHL. Jay-sus.... he still had a lot of game left in him. It's just... weird that he's done with the NHL.

Meh, he wanted to go back to Russia, but had the Rags made any offer at all he would have stuck around.
This doesn't strike as an incident where the KHL stole a player away - Omsk was always his second choice.

He is, but he played in Omsk during the lockout and frequently expressed his desire to return there. The owner of Omsk considered giving him partial ownership in the team after he left.
He's by far the most popular hockey player in Eastern Europe.

That article/argument is a load of horseshit. So a marginal NHL player that takes a contract in Europe for more money is more noble than an elite player taking more money in Europe than to continue his NHL career? That's retarded.
Fuck, man, it's Bobby Hull signing with Winnipeg all over again. Do people care that he followed the money to this day and ended what could've been a record setting NHL career? I don't know, maybe some aged honkies still think so, but let's not let misinformation or innuendo ruin what was a great NHL career. He never won the Cup after he got money. Fine. But I don't think he ever was on a team that should've won the Cup after 1993. He was on a couple that potentially could have, but come on... let's not shit on a player who could've stayed and passed Messier for 2nd all time points and carried on a futile attempt by Glen Sather to find some weird free agency method of winning the Stanley Cup.
The NHL lost a lot of talent today. The product will be worse as a result.

Fuck... he took less salary with Omsk than the Oilers offered him at $7m for 1 season.
The catch? No one offered him 2 years, because of the over 35 signing restrictions in the CBA. Omsk offered him 2 years, $10m total. I guess $5m per tax free is a bit better than $7m per in Canada, but still...
I can't believe no one stepped up with a 2 year deal. It seems unfathomable that a team wouldn't risk it for Jaromir.

I'm not the most competitive person around, so that dictates my p.o.v.
If I was Jagr, I wouldn't be driven by a Cup since my name is already on it, and in today's NHL - it's lunacy to expect your name to be on it many times. Instead, my drive would be personal comfort and future needs. The press in N.A. complains about Jagr - moving to E. Europe would alleviate that. It's a return to a culture that would be more recognizable. And finally, the money is better.
It seems to be in keeping with the European vs. N.A. way of life. Here - a job defines a person and becomes the raison d'etre. For Europeans, it's a means to an end. e.g. Toronto vs. Montreal.
I can't say I'll miss Jagr all that much. At most, we've lost a few good seasons from him - but there are younger players ready to take his spot.

Very interesting. I agree with above statements which state the Jags is not concerned with a CUP - been there done that. I also agree with the point that Jags is more comfortable in Eastern Europe - he has said many times that he does not like living in the US. I don't know whether he speaks Russian, but he was never comfortable with speakig English.
And - he's 35 years old. Not over the hill to be sure, but trying to make as much money as he can until his "hockey-time" runs out is not selfish at this point.
I frequently wished that he could have had a better team around him in these past few years. One of my "Wonder If" moments has always been "What if he were on the Red Wings team?"
Jags is an awesome player, won all the awards he could have, won the Cup when he was a youngster, and played for the NHL from the get-go.
I say, "Farewell, Jags, thanks for the memories. Good Luck and God Bless, wherever you go."

| Meh, no hard feelings. It was clear after this season that the Rags were ready to move on without him and I don't think he'd put forth his best effort for any other team...he proved that during his stay in Washington. I'm sad to see him go but I think there's more than enough marquis talent in the league to mitigate the loss. |
