Across the province today, British Columbians are remembering a sports legend.
Bob Ackles passed away Sunday morning after suffering a major heart attack on Bowen Island.
Sportswriter Jim Taylor says Ackles championed the CFL, "He always had that pride. He just refused to apologize for this league for being smaller and we used to talk about and would say 'okay here's the deal: the Americans have more of the better players, the NFL has more of the better players, we have the better game."
Phil Reimer has been a friend of Ackles for years, "This is a sad blow. Our community has lost one of the really good people in this province."
Ackles led the B.C. Lions to a CFL title in 1985 and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2002.
Ackles started with the BC Lions as a water boy and worked his way up to President. I heard him on CKNW when his book came out, he was an amazing man. |

Indeed, Ackles single-handedly revived the Lions, and by extension gave a huge lift to the CFL.
Very sad.

yeah , he's an icon in Vancouver sports and just Vancouver overall.
I like the idea of re-naming BC Place , Bob Ackles Memorial Stadium.
Has anybody read his book , The Waterboy ? I wanted to check it out but being that Im a little unmotivated when it comes to literature , but Ill make an effort to make that my summer read. |

was always planning on picking that book up as well. Flying down to San fran on Wednesday, might be a good time to grab it for the flight down.
I don't know why, but i actually shedded a little tear when i found out, usually this sort of stuff doesn't effect me in this way. Someone big in sports passes, i usually think, thats terrible, soo sad, and then go on my merry way, but this time i'm glued listening to 1040, office guys are talking about it. its crazy. Not since Greg Moore passed has a sports icon has affected myself and the city in such a way.
One of my restaurants is located right beside BC place stadium, the amount of media thats around is nuts! |
