| Once a year we sign a fringe guy to a one way deal that doesnt make sense. I was getting worried there for a bit I thought the Canucks were actually going to aoivd signing aging fringe journeymen players to one way deals... phew! all is back to normal. |

Better than signing them to two year deals like Chouinard, that's for sure...

Sign the vet and let the kids play 20 minutes a night in the AHL...but Detroit's in a different situation than Van... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

So the signing is now confirmed... and indeed if it's a one-way, I don't get it. He's a perennial AHL all-star, but unless he's going to get offensive ice time in Vancouver, why bring him in? Let the kids develop... give Grabner, Raymond et al a chance to succeed. Ask "What would Detroit do?" |
Detroit probably would ink a veteran stop-gap if they weren't absolutely 100% sure that their prospects could handle the role. Jiri Hudler played 3 years in the minors because of this. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? By the way, even though he pronounces it to rhyme with "rogue," it hasn't stopped an amusing meme from spreading, with this picture:
followed by "KROOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGG!!!!" _________________

"Cowan, Krog and the Hord" has a ring to it. Like a 70's Arnold extravaganza.

Krog's deal is indeed one-way:
| Ben Kuzma wrote: |
Krog, 32, is coming off an AHL championship with the Chicago Wolves and his one-year, one-way contract with the Vancouver Canucks for an undisclosed figure speaks of confidence in the free-agent centre. The Fernie native had 112 points to win the AHL scoring title last season, added 36 points in the playoffs and was named league MVP. |
Gillis:
| Quote: |
"He's coming off a great season that adds to a player's versatility and leadership," said Gillis. "We're trying to get to a more aggressive team with lots of elements that lead to leadership.
"I don't think we've left any stones unturned in trying to acquire players who add something to our lineup. We want to create competition at training camp with jobs on the line." |
Krog:
| Quote: |
"The last two years, I had a first-line role [in the AHL] and would get called up into a more defensive situation," said Krog. "I went from 20 to 25 minutes in the AHL to 8 to 10 in the NHL, so it's tougher to get going and play the same style.
"I was a centre in Anaheim, but also played left wing and right wing and anywhere from the first to fourth line. Hopefully, my versatility can help out. I take pride in faceoffs and the penalty kill and wherever they [Canucks] need me." |
So in other words, he could thrive if put in an offensive situation. But that'll never happen. So he'll languish away and people will wonder why he was signed. _________________

On the bright side he buried a ridiculous slapper on Cujo in the '03 playoffs. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Uh-oh, our "missing piece of the puzzle" may not be able to captain Team Canada in the Olympics and such:

The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Alexander Radulov while they investigate the details of his transfer to the newly formed Russian KHL.
As well, the transfer of five other players - Nikita Filatov, Thomas Mojzis, Jason Krog, Fedor Fedorov and Viktor Tikhonov - is also being investigated by the governing body.
"Until this investigation has come to its final conclusion and the IIHF has rendered its decisions, all concerned players will be suspended from international transfers and competitions," read a statement from the IIHF on Friday. |

| The last player Krog's age to come up from the minors and make it as an NHL star was one Johny Bower. That was 50 years ago and he played goal, not forward. Nice to see Gillis continues the Nonis tradition of throwing money at 5th line forwards to fill out his roster (Chouinard, Santala, Isbuster, Ritchie). |
