It's kind of a slow night in the NHL with only six games on tap and only two of the teams above .500. Ok, a bad night of NHL hockey is better than a good night of other television watching. Struggling team versus struggling team can produce an entertaining matchup. I just can't get excited about Toronto v. New Jersey, Florida v. Buffalo or Phoenix v. Dallas. For fans of those teams only, so here are my picks for the night...

Early game...

1.) Philadelphia at Washington: (7:00 PM EDT) Philadelphia really stunk the joint up in Montreal last night. They can't be a happy bunch of campers and should be looking to rebound against the Capitals. The Capitals have their own issues but can play well in spurts. Two teams looking to rebound from disappointing defeats. Biron v. Kolzig. It might be a decent watch.

Late games...

1.) Nashville at Edmonton: (9:00 PM EDT) Nashville shocked me and shut out the Canucks in Vancouver the other night. They are really having a rough year with player losses and ownership turmoil. The thing is, this team still has talent and can still play a decent game of hockey. Edmonton is the same thing. When they want to play they can give you a heck of a fight. Both teams have good goaltenders. This game could get feisty too with a bunch of Friday night drunks in the stands in Edmonton egging them on.

2.) Los Angeles at San Jose: (10:30 PM EDT) This is the start of a home and home series between these two teams so nastiness can start and be answered the next night. San Jose leads the Pacific Division by one point over the Kings. This could be an excellent early statement game in the Pacific. Division. Is San Jose a serious title contender? Is Los Angeles going to be a real factor in the west this year? Los Angeles has been coming on after a slow start. They are playing a gritty in your face style of hockey and it's been working. They have lost Kyle Caldr to a broken thumb. They are led offensively by Cammalleri, Kopitar and Frolov. The blue line has some decent skill with Visnovsky and Blake. LaBarbers is doing nicely in net, going 3 - 1 in his last 4 games. San Jose is also coming out of it's early season problems for the most part. They have won 3 of their last 5 games. Joe Thornton is playing like a man possessed. He is just willing this team to play better. Nabakov is playng a good, steady, game. The Sharks are always in your face. This game could turn out to be fun on a lot of levels.
