The Corsi numbers for the Oilers are to the side here. I don't include blocked shots here, it's the total number of missed shots, saved shots, goalposts, crossbars and goals directed at the opposition's net while a player was on the ice ... minus the same at his own end of the rink. These have been corrected for ice time, every Oiler's numbers have been prorated to Staios' EV ice time, because he's the Oiler with the most of it.
As a point of reference: Zetterberg is +91 by this exact metric, and looks poised to lead the league again by this measure, in spite of playing tough opp. Granted Babcock teams are always a little shot happy, surely that helps. Lidstrom will lead all defencemen at this, he's +60 already (after the Staios' ice time level correction) and probably by some distance, in terms of just shots +/- he's been a world beater ever since the NHL started publishing shift charts, probably longer. Really, in a fairer world he'd have won 10 Norris trophies in a row by now. |
He has a chart with Edmonton's numbers... an interesting stat.

I love the stat (basically because I love all stats) but it has to be kept in perspective. Are Zetterberg's numbers that high just because he's so good, or because he's good, Detroit doesn't have a deep team (offensively) and he's constantly playing against defensive players who couldn't hit Detroit's net from 10 feet away? Inverse the logic for players like Staois and Hannan, who aren't offensive players and are their respective teams shutdown players.
Like other stats, this can show some good trends, but there's more than just the actual numbers.....Also, why doesn't he include blocked shots? It's written as if they have been disregarded. |

In fairness to Zetterberg, Babcock will often match up the top line against the other teams' top line. So the stat is not really tilted due to the fact that he's playing against defensive players. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are great defensive players, which is often overlooked due to their offensive talents.

Hank I realize is very good defensively, but methinks "great" being applied to Pavel's defensive ability is a wee bit of an exaggeration.

Maybe an exaggeration. He's not going to win a Selke, but he's still very good in the defensive zone and his play there gets overlooked because of what he does in the offensive zone. He isn't big so he isn't going to dominate anyone with his size, but he makes great reads and is really good with his stick.
