Gonchar takes a boarding call with basically no time left in OT. A few shooters later, he gets a shootout attempt. Should players who are serving penalties at the end of OT be allowed to participate in the shootout?

It appears karma thinks they shouldn't... Gonchar fumbled his deke and didn't get a shot off.

I say make it where they can't participate in say the first 3 or 4 maybe.

I have evil thoughts that if a team has a penalty running beyond the end of OT, they should only get 2 shots in the first 3. Laughing

But I agree that the player serving it shouldn't be allowed to participate, maybe unless it goes past round 10, pretty much ensuring he won't get to.

As long as he served his full penalty time, there is no reason he could not take a shot. After all, players get to go back in the game after penalties - yes?

But that's the issue, were talking about players not serving the full penalty in OT.

The issue is, if a player gets a penalty with under 2 minutes left in OT, and time expires, should he be allowed back "into the game" for the shootout?

In Gonchar's case, he was off the ice for all of 2 seconds, and then participated in the shootout.

No. I've never understood why they were allowed to participate in the shootout despite the fact that they aren't even supposed to be on the ice.

Never thought of this before -

Agreed, if somebody's penalty hasn't expired prior to the conclusion of OT, they should be barred from participation in the shootout.

At the very least, they shouldn't be one of the top 3.

Then again you might see rampant diving in front of guys like Jussi Jokinen and Slava Kozlov in the closing minute of OT...

OK - Is the shoot-out timed? Could the penalty keep going into Shoot-out? From what you say happened - the player should either be thrown from the game or made to wait out the full two minutes. I agree with you guys if they do not time the shoot-out - the player should be out of play for the shoot-out.

Especially with a boarding penalty ... fuck no should he get to participate in the shootout

Mind you, I think shootouts are stupid anyways
wins, losses, OT losses, Shootout losses, etc......

It was easier to just have ties...
I'd rather see a 3 on 3 OT period than a shootout (like Beer Hockey Smile )
