Just saw an interview with Toews on RDI ("French CBC Newsworld")... had no idea he was fluent in French. Is his mother Franco-Manitoban or something?
Very cool to see... It's sad how few anglophone players are able to offer even rudimentary comments in French. Radio-Canada pretty much always has to default to Aaron Ward (or back in the day, Kevin Lowe) when it doesn't want to approach the same Québécois players for the 400th time.

Yeah, I heard that Toews was a Franco before. There is a decent population of Franco-Manitobans, it's not incredibly surprising.

Well he himself is anglo -- his French was very good, but still sounded FSL (mind you, even fluent Franco-Manitobans sound somewhat anglophone in French). I figure with a last name like "Toews," it's not coming from daddy's side, anyway...
