Holy fuck shut up Strachan. "Well MacInnis can shoot the hardest, so they must be good for everyone else!"
I wish people would shut the fuck up about this debate. There is no debate. Look at the top scorers across the entire league. What are they using? Composite.
| Quote: |
| The problem is this: While composite sticks produce blazing shots, they are decidedly inferior to wooden sticks when it comes to the game's finer points. Pucks do indeed fly off a composite stick when you're unleashing a shot. Unfortunately, pucks also fly off them when you're trying to receive a pass. Or even when you're trying to stickhandle. |
These are professional athletes. They know their fucking equipment. If they were worse off using composites on a daily basis, then they wouldn't use them. That might be a problem for you, Al, but guess what? They get used to them.
Let the people who are actually playing determine what's better for their game. Seriously.
| Quote: |
| But where is that shot going? If it's on the net, it may well be 20 mph faster than its counterpart from a wooden stick and may therefore beat a goalie when another shot wouldn't. But composite sticks are nowhere near as accurate as wooden sticks. So any gain from speed is negated by the lack of accuracy. |
How many guys in the top 50 goal scorers in the league are using wood? I can name them all. Paul Stastny. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Yeah this seems like a gross exaggeration. All I gotta say about composites is don't knock it 'till you try it. I thought I'd hate it but I don't and to tell you the truth I like it better (in ball hawk at least) insofar as I can do a lot more one-handed with my stick than I ever could with wood. And whiile my shot has improved my stickwork hasn't suffered any, though neither was all that great to begin with.
One reason why I don't think we'll ever return to the days of run-n-gun scoring? Goaltenders overall are just plain better, they're certainly better athletically than in the past. |

Not to mention most of the critics of composites choose to completly ignore another fact: Composites are consistent, and they last. Most NHLers will tell you that after a few hard wrist or slap shots, shooting with a wood is like a wet noodle. Those guys are so strong that when they take shots, wood sticks lose their flex very quickly. Composites don't. And while the composites explode more spectaculary, they broke/rendered useless far more wood sticks than composites. Sami Salo used to go through more than 300 a season, easy. And while the feel of the composites may be different, they are far more consistent. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

I don't really care for Al Stachan's work as a sports reporter.
Thank you.

Oh and obviously this does nothing to negate your point Bosc, I believe Jason Spezza uses wood as well...just FYI.
BTW I find it hilarious that the guy (Gretzky) who hates composites is also pushing very, very hard to get Thermablades in the league. |

I figured Jiri Tlusty would be Al Strachan's type. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

Gretzky doesn't like them because they don't make them in 5 pound models, and he isn't allowed to fill the hollow shafts with lead shot to compensate _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

This debate reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad tried to get me to use a straight blade because "it was good enough for Beliveau." _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Better than what my pops did, I started with the straight blade and then my dad, new to hockey himself, bought me a left-handed stick since that's the hand I write with. Funnily enough passes kept rolling off my blade until the coach took me aside when he realized the problem. |

Could have been worse, could have been this guy:
