Gradin: "yes Jaroslav Jagved"
det scout" Valdimir Jagved"
Gradin" of course its Vladimir! oh Valddy , good kid ...wanna share a cab when *we* get there?" |

It's pretty sad that Gradin is the only scout we can count on. Hopefully this new scout we hired (?name?) formerly with San Jose can help out our scouting.....
All jokes aside though, it does seem to have improved under Nonis. Sure, the guys are still prospects and haven't proved anything, yes we passed on Kopitar, but we at least seem to have moved up to the middle of the pack in drafting, not bad when you consider that we haven't had many extra picks and only one pick in the top 10 (which was #10). |

I think the drafting and scouting has improved since Ron Delorme arrived. Ron Payne and Lars Lindgren joined the Nucks in September.
From what I've seen of Edler, I'm impressed, too. He plays within his skills and abilities and he does make a good first pass 90% of the time it seems. He doesn't put himself out of position very often and doesn't panic. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Payne was the guy I was thinking about - the former head scout with San Jose. Lindgren is a pro scout - I usually find it tough to evaluate those guys.
As for Delorme, I'm not a big fan. When he was head of our Western scouting, we didn't get anyone from the WHL. His first few drafts (01-03) were pretty bad - Kesler, Umberger and Bieksa are the only NHL'ers, and we had a lot of picks. We only got 3 borderline guys as well - King, Kolstov and MacIver.
Lately though, it has improved. Since Nonis took over as GM, we haven't had more than 7 picks in a year, but we seem to be getting 2-4 prospects every year (although nothing is proven yet). I'm not sure whether this reflects a change in drafting philosophy, Delorme growing into the job or some other factor.
One thing which would be great to know is which scout really makes the decision on a certain player. Obviously it ultimately comes down to Delorme and Nonis, but who's the guy who said lets pick up Bieksa. The story of Gradin scouting Edler and convincing Nonis to move up to grab him was great, I wish there were more of them. |

welcome back N2W! hope the giant mall is treating you good
I like Nonis's staffs' philosophy , he's seeminggly much more open minded in his approach at the draft. Nonis is willing to draft off the board a little.
I like the hiring of Lorne Henning , he's in charge of player developement unless they changed it.
Nonis has also had more luck in finding young undrafted gems , Burrows and Rypien and this Labrie kid is really catching alot of attention too in Manitoba. Which is still a product of good scouting.
But as mentioned , the jury is still out on this era but generally its refreshing to see the variety. Nonis' 1st RDs: goalie , D , winger , C ... |

It's a myth that drafting has improved under Delorme -- it's just that recent drafts always look more hopeful because players haven't had a chance to bust yet. While other guys from past drafts (e.g. Rick Girard or Josh Holden) may have turned out better if not for injuries.
Mike Penney was generally terrible in the first round -- and I think that was Quinn more than Penney, always searching for the next Joel Otto instead of the next Pavel Bure. However, after the first round, Penney was actually decent, picking a lot of strong NHL players like Mike Peca, Adrian Aucoin, Scott Walker.
A guy called MS at HFBoards has put together some good stats demonstrating this -- Delorme is in charge of the WHL, takes far and away the most players from the WHL, and has busted something like 40 straight.(Or perhaps even every last one of them since he took over). That is a problem. When your greatest area of focus, in your own backyard, is your greatest weakness, you should be focusing elsewhere.
If Penney had only drafted from the OHL and couldn't land a player to save his life, they you could say he was worse than Delorme. But the record suggests otherwise. Thomas Gradin and maybe the NCAA scouts are the only redeeming factor at this point -- Canadian scouting is embarrassing. Actually, it's not even the scouting but the philosophy -- in the early rounds, people know who's highly regarded and who's not. You can follow Central Scouting rankings blindly and still come up with an OK assortment. It's their refusal to follow common sense -- always looking for something different, off-the-board, whatever -- which is ridiculous. Even if they wanted to stick to rigidly to the WHL, take players that other teams want, not some dude who Delorme thinks "works hard in practice." _________________

| I agree, I like Quinn/Penney's mid rounders , from Peca to Aucoin to Sopel.. they had alot of good picks after the 1st rd. No bigger than Pavel of course. Generally and historically the Canucks have been obsessed with the Gordie Howe winger since day one (Lever , Ververgaert , Jere Gillis , Manno ,Rick BLight , Vaive , Neely , Sandlak ,Linden..) , if not Gordie HOwe , its Bobby Orr/Ray Bourque...trying to get that stud D man. Drafting a top centre was so rare , then when they finally do ...its Nedved! lol ... whom I liked at the time , former T-Bird and 40,000 other fans applauded like me at the draft. |

Jannik Hansen sent down, Mike Brown recalled.
This is probably a combination of wanting to get Hansen some offensive minutes and confidence, and bringing in reinforcements for the Minnesota game, after Boogaard's second-grader tough talk following last game. _________________

That's hilarious... when I was in the middle of posting that, a partner walked into my office and we discussed things for a few minutes. Then I didn't actually post it 'till about 10 minutes later. I never noticed that you had posted in the interim until just now! _________________

I heard Dave Nonis describe Brown as a bigger Matt Cooke. If this is accurate , as mentioned in earlier posts , this team is full of shit disturbers , add another?
I dont think all of the media know this is a different Mike Brown caz alot of media hype him up as "muscle"for the big game vs Minny. Maybe he'll suprise me and be more Jeff Cowan than Matt Cooke. |

| Mason Raymond had a 5 point night (3goals) in a 5-3 win last night. Now has 11 points in 10 games and is a +9. |

Nice! Although if you take away his 5 point game, that's 6 points in 9 games... Not terrible, but not awe-inspiring... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

| My son gets to go to a Moose game on the 15th Vs. the Lake Erie monsters and on the next day he gets a skate with some of the a players. This is all part of a children's christmas benefit something or other that my father in law is performing at. I get to stay home and work but hopefully I'll get a Sunday game in January. |

Isn't that like saying, "If you take away Luongo's three straight shutouts, he only has one on the season. Nothing special." _________________

Yup. Take away LecLaire's 6 SO, and he's damned average. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Some articles by Winnipeg Sun writer Ken Wiebe on the emergence of Michael Grabner as a legitimate scoring threat for the Moose:
Grabner comes through at best possible time
| Ken Wiebe wrote: |
With a sizable chunk of the offence on loan to the Vancouver Canucks or on the shelf with a variety of ailments, the Manitoba Moose needed someone to carry the mantle as the go-to guy.
It was expected they'd have to do it by committee but Michael Grabner has ascended to the throne.
The Austrian speedster scored for the fifth consecutive game -- this time netting a pair to give him 13 on the season -- to lead the Moose to a 5-1 victory over the Rochester Americans before a crowd of 7,557 at the MTS Centre last night.
There have been the expected growing pains for the first round selection of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, but Grabner seems to be figuring out that he can have an impact every game with his strong skating and heavy shot.
|
Vote for Grabner: Slick Austrian contends for spot on all-star squad
| Ken Wiebe wrote: |
A year ago, the Moose had three representatives in the event held at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto -- Brad Moran, Jason Jaffray (a late addition due to injury, but a deserving candidate nonetheless) and Mike Keane, who captained Team Canada.
This time around, we expect Grabner could be the lone Moose to make the grade, though you could also make a strong argument for goalie Drew MacIntyre.
...
Grabner's recent stretch -- the 20-year-old saw his five-game goal scoring streak end last night -- has been a thing of beauty to witness. |

| that would be huge news overall in Canuck land if Grabner started to establish himself as a bonifide star in the AHL. Very exciting to read that. |
