we're nearing the 1/4 mark so why not:
From Spectors whom got this from TSN...
| Quote: |
Darren Dreger reports the following:
- The Philadelphia Flyers might be using forward Jeff Carter as trade bait for a defensive minded forward, and might be interested in Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, whom they attempted to sign to an offer sheet in 2006. It's believed however the Flyers also want more in return but if they're seeking one of the Canucks top prospects then Vancouver GM Dave Nonis won't bite.
Spector's Note: Carter presently sits fourth in Flyers scoring with 11 points, and his 942K salary is half as much as Kesler's and certainly affordable for the Canucks, provided of course the Flyers aren't seeking too much else in return. Now it remains to be seen if anything comes of this but at least this rumour is a plausible one, the first one of this season. |
I simply ask , would you ? straight up Carter for Kes? yes , no , why bother its the same |

Yes I would-Carter is an upgrade on Kesler--but if Carter is up for grabs maybe he could be had for a pkg like Carter & Knuble for Mo & Cooke |

I don't think DN would give up Kesler for Carter just for the cap space - when is Carter up for free agency (restricted or otherwise)? Gaining that cap room may only be temporary... Dunno if Carter is an upgrade on Kes; and I'd love to have Knuble but not the current one; I think he would have been terrific two or three years ago; I think he's pretty happy where he is and the Flyers love him there. _________________ ... Interesting reading what some of you think of Kesler , and a Carter <> Kes deal. I know some of you guys really covet both.
Keep in mind , I dont think they can bait and switch Kesler because Philly's love for Kesler is the whole reason this rumour has any legs , defeats the purpose if he's not involved. |

Yes, Nucks should do Kesler for Carter in a heartbeat, but Holmgren probably wouldn't do that straight up, like Dreger says. Remember that offer sheet was under Clarke. Carter has a lot more offensive skill than Kesler, is about the same size, is a year younger, and is still on his rookie deal. tCL, he has 4 years left before free agency. Philly shouldn't be giving up Carter for Kesler straight up. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Carter http://nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerBiography.asp?ID=27026
Kesler http://nhlpa.com/WebStats/PlayerBiography.asp?ID=27012
Carter is RFA after this season, at which point he'll demand at least Kesler money so any cap relief to get him would likely only last this season. Kesler is on the books for $1.75M until the end of the 2010 season. I think the obvious risk in swapping Carter for Kesler is that DN will be unable to re-sign him before he goes RFA and someone else (Philly perhaps) would give him an offer sheet this summer that DN cannot afford to match. Then we'd be out Kesler AND Carter.
Both are righties and just because he (Carter) is, doesn't mean he'll be magic with the twins; Kesler has seen them play for several seasons now and he still can't play with them (at least not to any significant level). So we would really only gain short-term cap relief, at the risk of losing both players.
If I were DN, I wouldn't do it. Just wait until the end of the season and see if he can get Carter to sign an offer sheet... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

tCL, you're worried that if the Nucks acquired him, they'd risk not being able to re-sign him if someone gave him an offer sheet, but on the other hand you'd want them to wait and give him an offer sheet?
If the Nucks somehow manage to acquire Carter, he'll definitely get more dough than Kesler. I'd say he'll get anywhere from 3-4 million if he signs past UFA. The Nucks would also not be worried because they'd have Morrison and Naslund off the books. I also think if they do get him, they'd be better off putting him at C instead of loading him in with the twins. More balance.
The Flyers have Coburn, Umberger, Richards, and Carter all RFA this offseason. Rathje is likely to be on LTIR again. Gauthier is probably trade bait. Carter would be a good choice for an offer sheet, but it'll probably be dollars like Penner got. However, Richards would be my choice for an offer sheet, not Carter... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

And I'd do it if it was for a long enough term.
As for the trade, straight up I'd do it....if, as originally presented in the thread it was a 1-1 deal. If the Flyers want Kesler and anything else of significance, forget it - threaten them with an offer sheet!
If we did get Carter, I wouldn't worry about an offer sheet from another club. We could afford to match anything up to Penner's deal, and if he got offered more we could take the picks and run...besides, as long as we sign him before we get close to the cap it probably wouldn't be an issue.

Carter has always been more of an offensive player, while Kesler was projected as a 3rd liner with upside from the day he was drafted. This doesn't mean he'll be magic with the twins, but he could at least anchor a 2nd line
As for losing both, Kesler is a UFA when his deal runs out.....if you get Carter and sign him to a 3 year deal after this season you've already got him for longer. I'm doubtful as to whether Kesler re-signs here after his current deal is up, so I'd be willing to trade for some more offence, and hope Carter signs a longer term deal. |

Yes, because if they wait until the summer, they still have Kesler and potentially a shot at Carter.
If they acquire him now in exchange for Kesler, they risk not being able to resign him (b/c he might get greedy or doesn't feel any loyalty to Vancouver). _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

I dont see Nonis biting on him. 35 yrs old , one more year at 4M , injury prone and clearly on the decline. If Vancouver had a guy equal in contract and status , maybe a switch up but I dunno. When he was on and healthy I thought he was a prime candidate to be the 3rd Sedin but I get the sense he's in John Leclair mode (back end of his career that is).
Let those other teams have him. |

Don't shoot the messenger, but Eklund is claiming that Vancouver is trying to pry Alexander Semin out of Washington, with some competition from Deadmonton. _________________

haha , I just gotten back from Eklund's web too! I was just about to post that
here's his report:
| Quote: |
UPDATE 3:38 PM....2 Western Canadian Teams have interest in Alex Semin. (e2)
I talked to a source in NY JUST told me that two of the three Western Canadian Teams are currently trying to put together packages to attempt to trade for Alex Semin out of Washington...Another source in Western Canada confirmed this. I will continue to track this throughout the next few days...(amidst eating)
Update 5:40
Looks to me like it is Vancouver that is putting the best package together, but Edmonton could be included... |
Razz is always up for more Semin(pronounce it the cool way) in vancouver |

Keep in mind its only a mere E2 , so its not a real rumour yet though he has two sources confirm that it is indeed a rumour...so lets hope the Eklund metre hits E3 soon!

Thought Murray was up this year...
As for Carter, you guys are wearing the rose coloured glasses again. Nonis should be jumping to send that fax off to the league. Carter is far better a prospect than Kesler. Kesler won't ever score - Carter will, and a ton... |

If Washington is willing to make a deal , I would go after Chris Clark , on paper he seems like a Vigneault type of player to a tee. I can see him on all three lines with Sedins , Mo or Kesler and fit right in.
Something has to give in DC soon , Carrot Top is one my favourites of all time. I gota feeling "its" coming soon. |

Clark's their captain -- I doubt he's movable, although getting him would make Av-merican a Canuck fan, which'd be fun.
