Where there’s smoke, there’s fire! Surprised

It's going to happen! It's just a matter of when.

It’s glaringly obvious among Leafs Nation that the ownership of this franchise is downright inept & dysfunctional, though Fergusson was nonetheless granted the autonomy to use his judgment & put together a winner – instead, take a look at the monster he has built:

Let’s start w/ the goaltending:

Vesa Toskala – already was signed by San Jose on the current deal, which will pay him $1.3 million this season. He however inked an extension tendered by the Leafs prior to the start of this season for an additional 2 years, totaling $8 million.

Andrew Raycroft: Within 10 days after swapping highly regarded European netminder, Tuukka Rask for Raycroft, Fergusson signed him for 3 years, $6 million. He will have 1 year remaining on this contract following the conclusion of the ’07 – ’08 season & then be eligible for unrestricted free agency. By this time, Rask will be the Bruin’s #1 goalie.

While Toskala has indeed looked like the sharper of the two, neither one of these guys have been able to display any consistency, thus making them unattractive on the trade market. Judging the Ilya Bryzgalov deal with Phoenix – already looking like a better goaltender than either Toskala or Raycroft; Toronto’s best case scenario is losing one of these guys via the waiver wire.

On defense:

Bryan McCabe, 5 years, $25.75 million – 3 years remaining after this season. No movement clause, so unless he waives his no-trade clause AND somebody agrees to take up this contract (which is possible, as I THINK he is making $7 million+ of that contract this season alone), we’re stuck w- him.

Tomas Kaberle, 5 years, $21.25 million – 3 years remaining after this season.

Carlo Colaiacovo, 3 years, $3.85 million – 2 years remaining after this season for a guy who hardly plays.

Pavel Kubina, 4 years, $20 million – 2 years remaining after this season for another oft-injured d-man.

Hal Gill, 3 years, $6.3 million – 1 year remaining after this season

Forwards:

Jason Blake, 5 years, $20 million – 4 years remaining after this season.

Nik Antropov, 2 years, $4.10 million – 1 year remaining

Alexei Ponikarovsky, 3 years, $6.315 million – 2 more years remaining w/ this floater who is devoid of passion.

While rumours are just that, I'm very excited at the mere prospect of a guy like Glenn Healy becoming the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Sure, he’s a gamble w/ no front office experience. But the guy obviously knows the game, having 14+ years of experience in the NHL. Furthermore, he has charisma & is likeable – a lot more than can be said for the current GM & let’s not forget, that’s an essential trait for any successful sales guy. It’s going to take just that to get out of this mess!

I say we form an OTP Leaf forum committee and offer to manage the team.

Hey what is Quinn doing these days?

If the Leafs had more players performing at Ponikarovsky's level they might be in a playoff spot.

With everyone complaining about JFJ being a rookie GM and how he's sucked, what is the fascination with putting a guy like Healey or Messier with ZERO front office experience in there? If the hiring of Garth Snow and the Isles subsequently making the playoffs snowballs into this...unbelievable. Unless Healey has some impeccable credentials that I'm overlooking...

Healey apparently was up for the job last time, or at least was in the mix for some job a couple years back. When did he retire again?

Someone on the MLSE board likes him.

And as we've seen with Tie Domi, that has fantastic repercussions for the team.

Well they don't know yet if a rookie Committee will be the failure a rookie individual was. I mean it's worked for a week or two in Dallas, how much more evidence do you need than that?

They should hire Bob McKenzie. You know he'd love it.

Only if his brother Doug was brought on board as well.

We know how they'd settle committee decisions.

Maybe they'll follow St. Louis' lead and make him the advisor? Laughing

Yeah, trading essentially two first rounders for Toskala and Raycroft (two goalies without no. 1 track records), then giving them long term deals before they even hit the ice was a bad idea.

Bryan McCabe was Toronna's equivalent of Sheldon Souray, and instead of letting him go and shoring up the d, they gave him a ridiculous contract out of a sense of misguided loyalty. They did add Kubina (their Hamrlik, if you will) but now you're spending big money on 3 defencemen. Strike two.

Hardly Ferg's fault, but his regime was equally as inept at finding Sundin two quality linemates as previous GM's. Jason Blake was a suspect addition, seeing as his game is better suited for a grinding team.

MLSE is a mess, and if they can't figure out who's in charge, there's little hope for any GM. If they were serious, they'd get Scotty Bowman or someone of similar stature, make him the highest paid GM in the league, and give him full autonomy.

Good write-up from Spector basically saying that any GM in his right mind would stay the hell away from this debacle... http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=124973

Decent write-up I suppose, and maybe I'm reading it wrong but...he does know Rask isn't Leafs property anymore, right?

Lordy, didn't know even Hal frickin' Gill doesn't come off the books after this season. There is little or no cap relief in sight for the foreseeable future. What a mess. Really sad when Gill's deal isn't even close to being the worst one Ferguson's made thus far.
