SF, yeah, I watched the very grainy feed from Minnesota - I was disappointed not to see this in HD. Remember in the second game, the puck was in Minnesota's end for long durations of the game? It seemed like this game was a mirror image of that one, only with it being in Vancouver's zone - the Canucks had very few legitimate scoring chances all night.

And we have Mike Keenan to thank for a) getting us a better-than-expected return on Todd Bertuzzi, b) finally shoring up this team's long-standing weakness in net, c) doing more in that one move to eliminate that black cloud that has hung over this team since the Moore incident than anyone else has.

Yes, it's certainly true - we've no illusions about being a run-and-gun team since the lockout. DN made no bones about re-building this team "from the goalie out" from his first day as GM and he has pretty much kept to that script. This team was woeful offensively last season, added Aaron Miller and replaced a few bit players on offence so there's no reason to think that they've upgraded offensively.
As for the prior two games, I think perhaps the Wild were not on their game - certainly an ailing Gaborik and Demitra doesn't help your cause. And I'm sure that if the tables were turned and any two of the Sedins/Naslund or Luongo were out during those games, the outcome would have been different.
This team has, however, been getting more scoring from Kesler, BMo, and the defense lately. Kesler, in particular, has been excellent in a shutdown role.

I think that's fair.
And it is interesting to me how similar the Canucks and Wild are right now. With the exception that Luongo is in another league than Backstrom (or anyone else, really, right now), both teams have a superior goalie, solid defense (and a system where the forwards help out a lot) and marginal offense.
This would seem like a scarier thing were our two teams not 1-2 in the division right now (and, most likely, for the rest of the regular season). |
