There is much about this Vancouver Canucks' season which defies reason -- a month ago they looked worse than Joan Rivers after a tequila binge, they turned things around after losing two of their top four defencemen in the same game -- but assuming their current run isn't a mirage -- while conveniently ignoring Sunday's 2-1 loss to Minnesota -- there is something about this team which makes you wonder if they're the real deal.
The Canucks, for instance, have never had a size-and-speed centre like Ryan Kesler, who can anchor a shutdown line while providing offence. Markus Naslund, if he is all the way back, gives them the legitimate sniper they've been missing. Alex Edler is 21 and looks like he's getting better every game.
Collectively, they're bigger and tougher than they've been, there's depth in Manitoba, they've still got cap room and Kevin Bieksa has to return sometime.
Last season's team finished with a franchise record 105 points. This team is better. A lot better.
|
I dunno about this. It's a long, long season and while this team has weathered the storm on their D pretty well this past month, saying this team is "better" than last year, IMO, is going way out there on a limb. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

It might be a little better, but nothing is "a lot" anything under the salary cap.
Fans seem still not to understand this, and think #6 knocking off #3 in the playoffs is a colossal upset, etc. HF Boards could benefit greatly from the phrases "by far" and "hands down" being out-and-out banned. _________________

What do "we guys" have to do with anything?
When was the last time your black-and-white world lined up with the real one, anyway? _________________

Someone posted this in here, that's the contribution...
I'm far more realistic than THAT... That takes "Canuck fan" logic to a whole new extreme. They rattle off a 6 game losing streak and he'll be writing about how Nonis needs to go, how the prospect cupboard is bare, how Naslund shouldn't be re-signed... chump... |

Depends on how you read Ed's last sentence
| Quote: |
| Last season's team finished with a franchise record 105 points. This team is better. A lot better. |
If you take this statement statistically , then yeah , thats a bold statement to make caz 49 wins and 105 pts is a high standard to suggest they are "alot better".
Now if you take it as a team process , then its true to a certain degree. I Wouldnt say "alot better" yet but it could be. There is way less maintenance on this team and there way less '?' on this roster.
For eg. Straight up Kesler , Krajicek , Naslund are much better this season to last. Last season all 4 lines had '?' and the D had ? ... this season , the only hole that sticks out is the Morrison line aka "secondary scoring".
So from an actual team process , Ed's statement isnt as far off as he exaggerates it to be. I agree the team is "better" but I would say its too early to say "alot better" though the potential to be "alot better" is there. |

Why is that a crazy statement?
Edler is an example of this "depth in Manitoba".. he's not bad eh , he shouldnt even be playing here if Bieksa was healthy
Schneider is as good as a goalie prospect in the AHL
Bourdon is back on track , he's a pretty good guy on the farm.
Raymond , Grabner , Shannon , Hansen ... thats depth. Last season the CAnucks top mid season call ups were Nathan Smith , Brandon Reid and Brad Moran , *edit* and eventually Hansen ( I forgot he played the full season in AHL , I was thinking Grabner). The group of kids I listed is much improved over the previous depth of call ups. |

Roll your eyes all you want, those are shit propects. Edler, Bourdon, Schnieder, sure, all look like they're gonna be solid, dependable NHLers, probably more in Bourdon and Schnieder' cases.
But Grabner can't hack it in the WHL playoffs, and the others are not exactly 18 years old. The idea that they will amount to anything useful is laughable... |

Funny, you said the same thing about Bieksa and Edler being shit as well in the past. I applause your endorsement of Canucks draft picks. |

Which current NHL superstar or past WHL superstar did Grabner play with in his one and only junior playoff series last season with Spokane? The last time I looked hockey was a team game and no one with Spokane lit it up in the playoffs. You're basing Grabner's whole career potential on one 6 game series? I'm sure the Bruins are calling you right now to hire you as their head amateur scout.
No, the others aren't 18 years old, Raymond is 22, Hansen is 21 and Shannon is 24. Then again, Bruins players such as Alberts were referred to as prospects by you at age 26. So why are Canucks prospects failures if they don't break out at age 18 then? |

Based on razz' accuracy as a prognosticator these last few years, I'm not the least bit concerned about his opinion of these kids. Remember, he's the guy who would rather have Phaneuf over Lidstrom. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

He also based Sidney Crosby's on an all-star game and analyzed the Joe Thornton trade in light of one goal by Wayne Primeau. And while he hasn't gotten around to admitting it, he does believe that Boyes-for-Wideman was a great trade.
Life must rock when the team you cheer for has never made a mistake, and the team you hate and claim not to follow, but post in every thread in their forum, has still never done one thing right. _________________

| Boston's prized AHL forward prospect David Krejci = zero career NHL goals in 18 games...Canucks' "depth" 4th line prospect Mike Brown = 1 goal in 3 games... Canucks prospects are leading the arms race in producing 50 goal snipers. |

That Bieksa's having a career year...
Alberts was playing top 2 minutes at a similar age, and holding a positive plus minus. Your foursome sees more time on Westjet planes to Winnipeg than it does on the ice. Small difference.
I do prefer Phaneuf to Lidstrom. If both were 26 I'd take Lidstrom. Easily. Both are not 26. Lidstrom is old, Phaneuf is young. Give me Phaneuf.
I have never denied Crosby's talents. I merely suggest he is a crybaby, showoff, one dimensional, immature, pompous ass who will never lead his team to the promised land. That's a nice segway to Joe Thornton. Although Primeau showed more heart on his goal than Joe did his whole time in Boston, my love for that deal is the fact that we ended up with Sturm, Kobasew and Ference, and cap room, for a guy that disappears when it matters.
Tough for a hockey fan follow the Canucks when you live in Vancouver. It's following a superior team back east, one that gets no press coverage west of Toronto, that is a challenge.
Luvah's just choked that Krejci isn't a Canuck, he'd be out at 8 rink asking for a date every day... |

Thornton is a vanishing act in playoffs & that's about all of this post I can agree with. |
