that article is right on the money

I was going to comment on EL's claim that the Marlins should be in contention in a few years with all the prospects they landed - but that article states it much better than I could have...

I actually said to someone at lunch today " I wonder when they'll start shopping Hanley Ramirez, maybe we can get him back"

This time it's not expensive veterans they've shipped off, it's young studs
the type you trade expensive veterans for

the Marlins have basically become a farm system for the rest of the league

Well Loria's previous team, the Expos, did the same thing, so no surprise.

It really would be nice to see one of these sports owners come out and say he's going to pick up the tab on a new stadium. But when you're getting it for free basically AND in most cases get to keep all revenues generated by it, well...

Actually the word in Detroit today is that Inge may be kept around as a super sub. He can play every position except pitcher. It will depend on whether he would be happy in that role. He has a big contract with 2 or 3 years left on it. He'll be a tough trade.

Andruw Jones, he of the declining defensive skills and expanding waistband, has signed a two-year deal with the Dodgers. They deserve each other.

As for the Marlins trading young studs thing, yes that is true and perhaps what makes this different. What I will suggest is this: Dontrelle could very well be finished as a frontline starter, so we'll forget about him for a minute. As for the centerpiece Miggy, he is already arbitration-eligible and will be a free agent in a couple of years. By the time the Marlins plan to be competitive (let's say 2010), Miggy will already be making at least 20M, far outside the Marlins price range regardless of whether they are rebuilding.

They still need young pitching, as they don't really have a Beckett or Penny in the system beyond Miller, who's a big-time stud. Unfortunately other than Ramirez (who isn't arby-eligible for a while), they don't have anything to trade, so they'll have to draft heavy and hope some kids are ready by then. Perhaps Uggla will get moved.

I suppose there's also a chance Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez come back healthy, but it's doubtful.

The Giants were discussing about possibly acquiring Hideki Matsui? Signing Tadahito Iguchi to play 3B? Still in on the Fuku-you, Fuku-me sweepstakes?

I'd call them the Tokyo Giants, but that team already exists.

I'm pretty sure Bob Kraft footed the entire bill for Gillette Stadium (umm, other than the obvious naming rights Laughing )

Sorry Tom I was trying to answer your post about Inge and I accidently deleted it. To answer your question Inge was the starting 3rd basemen and utility man last year. He even played some outfield as well as evey other infield position. He started out as a catcher with Detroit and was the starter until Pudge Rodriguez was signed. Polanco was the starting 2nd basemen all year. He actually ended up taking 3rd in the AL batting title race with Ordonez and Ichiro.

Fukudome update:

Cubs and Padres might be offering him money in the 12-15M range. It also says a decision from Fukudome "is expected tonight or tomorrow."

Warm up some coffee, we ain't going anywhere.

Teams don't have to bid on the right to negotiate with him, as with Dice-K last year? Or was Dice-K still under contract or something?

So long, Jamey Carroll...

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=224713&hubname=

We damned well better have a good utility man to play all those outfield positions. Apparently the Rox will be focusing on Tadahito Iguchi to take the departed Kaz Matsui's spot in the lineup. Failing that they might take a swipe at David Eckstein.

The lineup for the Rockies still looks solid as all hell. Assuming Atkins won't be traded the batting order for next year will likely be...

Tavares
Tulowitski
Holliday
Helton
Atkins
Hawpe
Torrealba
Iguchi
Pitcher

Sooner or later Ian Stewart will have to be worked in there somehow.

Rotation looks solid as well...

Francis
Cook
Jimenez
Morales
Hirsh

For some reason Fogg isn't on the depth chart...I thought we still have him under contract.

Good news is that ownership coughed up a nice extension for Cook, hopefully this means they will do so with players like Holliday as well.

The Brewers offer Gagne 10 mil? Perhaps he can be somewhat productive but after his tanking in Boston I seriously doubt it....

Holy-shit Shocked

After the dismal showing in Boston?

That guy is a tool. And he owes me money.

I do not like Eric Gagne anymore.

That fat bitch.

He can still be an upper-tier closer in the NL. I'm a tad biased, though.

Mad Dog Russo is a big Giants fan. Here he goes bananas over the Rios-Lincecum rumours. I'm with him. Sabes isn't planning on trading him, he's yanking JP's chain in order to trade one of the other pitchers (Lowry/Sanchez) for a lesser hitter (Lind).

Apparently Gagne gets his 10 million per over one year from the sudsy ones. I have less sympathy for small markets when they blow a ton of money on a guy who has an arm like a volcanoe, and wasn't very good when last healthy anyway...

Fukudome is a Cub.

If I didn't have a light buzz on, I'd be really pissed right now. Don't get me wrong, I'm mad, but I'll be punching things tomorrow.
