KINGS

@

CANUCKS

Friday, October 19, 2007
7:00 p.m. PDT, 10:00 p.m. EDT

Television: Sportsnet Pacific, Fox West

--------------------

Storylines:

The Kings played last night, falling to Calgary 4-3. (Anze Kopitar had a three-point night). Vancouver hasn't played since Monday. In other words, look for the Kings to start fast and the Canucks slow, but the tide to change as the game wears on.

If J.S. Aubin gets the start for Los Angeles, it'll be only the second time in his career he has played against Vancouver. In the only other time, he shut the Canucks out. If it's Burnaby's own Jason LaBarbera, he has never played against his hometown team.

Mason Raymond has been recalled from Manitoba and, according to Alain Vigneault, will draw into the lineup (in practice he skated with Rick Rypien and Trevor Linden. Meanwhile, The Chair is not expected to dress tonight.

Kevin Bieksa is listed as day-to-day with "suspected injuries" (please don't be a Jovo situation), and Jeff Cowan is out with a hip flexor. Sami Salo took his first full practice yesterday since breaking his wrist, but will not draw in tonight despite earlier optimism. Thankfully Lukas Krajicek, arguably Vancouver's best defenseman in the early-going, will be back in the lineup after missing one game with an injured foot.

I forgot Bieksa has his ab problems last year , I only remembered the broken foot in the playoffs... he was never the same after his first injury in the reg season. I recall he suddenly lost his mojo last year but couldnt remember if there was an injury and that report just reminded of his abdominal issues.

Canucks are already dipping into this "depth" on defence this season. Its like the hockey gods are buddies with Weaver.. whenever it looks the Canucks are healthy enough to sit Weaver somebody goes down with a "mysterious" ailment. Damn you! and damn you Vigneault for calling up Raymond before Shanny!!!!!

Crawford back in town. Look for Matt Cooke to have a good game. He'll be auditioning for his favorite coach, hoping he can rejoin Crow in LA if things continue for him the same way with Vigneault. I'm sure Crawford can get Lombardi to trade for Cooke. If he could convince Dean to trade for Cloutier, anything's possible.
Both teams coming off losses, both teams looking awful defensively. The Canucks are home, LA played last night. Vancouver should take this one. The Canucks' problems defensively are because the players aren't executing Vigneault's game plan. LA's are because Crawford's passive defensive game plan sucks, it's the same one he used in 2005-2006 where they give up the side boards and points. They allow way too many shots and expect their goalie to stop alot of screened and tipped shots. It should be easier for Vigneault to get the players to get back to basics (like last season) that to get Crawford's ego to admit his defensive game plan needs to be changed.

Apparently Larscheid is reporting on TEAM 1040 that indeed Edler is sitting and Waver is in. Rolling Eyes [Better yet, insert head-bump emoticon from Old OTP].

And apparently Isbister is going to be on the second line tonight (probably until the 8 minute mark of the 1st period when Vigneault gets impatient), in reward of his strong play against the Sharks.

I predict a return to the bad old form that the Nucks are known for: they suck when they've had more than one night off between games... More than two and they'll be lucky to wake up by the third period.

Yes, especially against a so-called "weak team."

This game has disaster written all over it. This is exactly the type of game the Canucks lose.

Maybe they'll call up Cloutier for old times sake.

2 things I wonder:

1) Why did they put Weaver in ahead of Edler and

2) How do Mr. P and Jyrki like their crow.

The Edler move was indeed very odd. My guess is either he still isnt ready and/or they see something in Weaver and wanna give him every oppurtunity.

Why does GM Place suck for home ice advantage.

We are inching closer and closer to the return of Shannon. Its not so easy to score goals is it ,Isbister and Kesler and whomever else thinks they can do it

Weaver ahead of Edler? We're all wondering the same thing.

How do I like my crow? Coaching any team other than Vancouver. I maintain he's not a bad coach but a stubborn one who doesn't correct his errors, due to the arrogance he has from coaching a Stanley Cup championship at too young and too early an age.

Back to the game. The Canucks lost this game because they stopped skating at both ends of the ice in the 2nd period. Pure and simple. I don't know what Naslund and Bieksa were thinking out there. It seems once you score on this team, they stop skating and go into a fog. Then multiple goals are scored on them putting them into a hole they can't climb out of. They didn't lose this game from lack of talent, they lost from lack of effort. Time for Vigneault to park some veterans.

Oh yes, Cooke played his best game of the season (surprise, surprise).

Hard to predict that outcome, however it does re-inforce that on an given night....

Nux need to get out of town. Time for a little team building, altho' Whistler might have been preferable to Columbus.

While last year's edition was mostly an unknown, higher expectations this year will not necessarily equate to a better performance in terms of wins and points.

And it appears that the division has gotten more competitive.

For all the talk of Weaver/Edler (but mostly Weaver's short commings) he, Weaver, was second only to Ohlund in TOI for the D and was a +1 last night. The staff must see something they like in this guy.

Still too early to get bent, however the beginning of this season certainly doesn't mirror the post Xmas effort of last year. Hopefully the familiarity of the confident group we saw at the end of last year will emerge sooner rather than later.

Ohlund was iffy in the first and second periods but kicked ass in the third. Krajicek was by far our best D, or so I thought...

LOL I was referring to the Timmy-Luongo comparison, but in any event, we'll trade you Wideman for Weaver straight up...

Please?

I'm confused as to what you mean, as I called a loss on this game...?

I was trying to be subtle and non-confrontational, but what I was getting at was the "our goalie and our D are far better than yours" mantra from OTP I. In any event, far more relevant to this forum is why they keep Shannon and Raymond on the farm when team speed appears to be an issue...

Raymond played in that game and looked pretty good from what I saw.
