Between taking Teach the Teacher classes, everything at my store (see chit chat section) and flying to North Carolina, I have not see ONE Red Wing game so far. I know it is unforgivable to let life get in the way of my Red Wings, but until the Wings pay my salary, I have to do what I have to do.
RW, Bosc - what is your take at this point? I see the scores, but I want the low down on how the team is really doing.
Thanks

I've seen a couple of games, but haven't really had much of a read. We coughed up 2 2-goal leads to Chicago. Which is very odd for this team. Since the lockout, we've generally dominated the third period. So this trend, if it continues, will get worrisome. We need to hold leads.
Hudler and Filppula aren't putting much points on the boards. It seems as though most of our secondary scoring is coming from Draper. We can't rely on ole stone hands to provide offense like this for the entire season.
Rafalski has done what I thought he would and gives a different look on the PP. He's more effective at skating the puck and dishing it off to create space than Schneider was. This creates more tippable shots for Holmstrom.
In the couple of games that I've watched, our breakouts have been great. We have D who are really effective at moving the puck out of our zone.
Hasek has looked shaky a few times. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

It's sort of early to make any real assessment on the Red Wings Lil, but this year is a little different. Because of poor ticket sales I have, the Wings and my pair of season tickets, attended three home games, Anaheim, Edmonton and Chicago. Alas all of my RW reports are gone in the change over. I can re-do the Red Wing picture sticky but be patient it will take some time.
On to the Red Wings themselves. I will break this down by position:
Goal: Osgood is playing out of his mind. He could easily be # 1 at this moment. Hasek is having his usual slow start. He was weak against Chicago, Anaheim in Anheim and the 1st period in Phoenix. He was the Dominator against Anaheim in Detroit and in the 2nd and 3rd periods in Phoenix. I have no worries in net. We have two Stanley Cup winning netminders. We'll be fine.
Defense: The incredible: Lidstrom and Rafalski. What else is there to say about a 5x Norris Trophy winning lock for the Hall of Fame. Lidstrom is truly one of the top 5 defensemen of all time. Rafalski is even better than advertised. His outlet pass is amazing. His defense is rock solid and he has a decent shot from the point. A definite upgrade over Schneider. The as expected or better. Chelios and Lebda. No surprises except Chelios scored a goal. I know I saw it. Lebda's speed is incredible. He's a real steal. Slightly disappointing: Kronwall and Lilja. Too many give aways and mental letdowns. I like Lilja's mean streak and Kronwall's hitting but the bad cross ice passes, the mental fuck ups and missed the assignments have to stop.
Forwards. The Holy shit these guys are superstars: Datsyuk - Zetterberg - Holmstrom. Zetterberg, the leagues leading scorer, is becoming the superstar I always predicted he'd become. Datsyuk is Datsyuk. Holmstrom, even more of a goal scorer. This line could become legendary very quickly. The better than expected lines: the 3rd anfd 4th lines: Draper, Maltby, Drake, Ellis, Downey, Samuelsson. These guys bring energy and grit to the Wings. They are as good if not better than advertised. Ellis and Downey are a great energy pair. The disappointments: The kids. Hudler, Filppula and Kopecky. They're playing so tight they break their sticks just by clutching them. They need to loosen up and just play. Hudler finally scored in Phoenix but Filppula missed a break away and an easy open netter. The kid's snake bitten right now. Kopecky is also playing tight. They all need to shoot more and pass less. Incomplete: Franzen, he may return this coming week. Grigorenko may replace one of the faltering youngsters at the end of the month.
Overall we have a 6 - 2 - 1 record and just went 3 - 1 on a tough west coast swing. We're doing ok. We've also done this with Franzen out and Samuelsson out for a couple of games. So we are not playing unscathed. Still it's only 9 games in. The two losses to Chicago means that that rivalry could be fun again. I was very impressed by Toews and Kane a couple of Friday nights ago in Detroit. I just got my NHL Center Ice package back so I can scout the competition again. The Central Division looks a lot better this year. I'll give a full 1/4 season analysis at the end of November. We'll have a better idea then how the Red Wings really look _________________ "The greatest victory a man can win is victory over himself."

Grigorenko might get a shot, but it sounds like it won't be much of one. While he's down for conditioning purposes right now, if he can't stick with the team when he comes back he'll likely end up back in Russia. This was something they mentioned on TSN or CBC, I can't remember which. Anyways, apparently Holland said that's the plan to them. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. Wallin, Grigorenko, Fischer... Man do we have some freak shit happen to some of our highly-regarded youngsters...Thankfully our scouting stuff is great so we still have enough picks that turn into good(sometimes great) players. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

It almost sounded like they were disappointed with his conditioning levels and it was something in Grigorenko's control even post-accident. But maybe not. Maybe he can never get back to that peak condition.
He'll get some NHL games in, though. So we'll see. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Sorry, that was a little off-topic thinking out loud on my part
Yeah, he supposedly came into camp out of shape. Which really sucks. I really hope that he can get into peak condition and contribute.
He's now with the Wings. He had an out clause to return to Russia after 3 weeks in GR. His 3 weeks are up and the Wings asked him to stay in GR, but he refused to Detroit has called him up and placed Franzen on the IR. Babcock says that he'll have to earn his ice like everyone else and they'll see if he can handle the pace. Apparently Backcock has been pleased with the play of Ellis and Downey, so we'll see what will happen when Franzen returns...

Grigorenko came into camp way out of shape. Management was not pleased to say the least. He showed amazing hands and hockey sense when he did play. The big problem is his speed. The broken leg / hip has apparently left him on the slow side. He has, at best, a fair first step. Sask was correct that he has a contract clause that has him playing in Detroit this year or he can return to Russia. He accepted the three week conditioning stint and expected to return to Detroit. He brought his wife over and rented an apartment in Detroit so he probably expected to stick with the team. If he can't earn ice time it's my guess he'll return to Russia for good. That will be too bad but I think the car accident damaged him too greatly to make it in the NHL. He just can't keep up. He really needs a year in the AHL to get used to the North American game. I can't blame him for returning to Russia if he does return. He'd be giving up a lot of cash to stay in Grand Rapids. _________________ "The greatest victory a man can win is victory over himself."
