I don't even think this is really worth posting but what the heck: From spector: Koivu + Ryder for either Marleau + Bernier , Bernier + Pavelski or just Marleau.

http://www.spectorshockey.net/rumors.html

Rumour started by a Montreal Gazette columnist with supposedly Bob Mckenzie as a source.

I obviously don't buy it.

Marleau to Montreal rumors have been going on since last summer. Due to people's tendency to say that any french guy who is on the block is going to Montreal I always wonder if the rumour starters know that Marleau is from Saskatchewan, not Quebec and I don't even know if he speaks french. I don't think his no-trade clause has kicked in yet otherwise I'd say there is no chance this happens - he's got a young family and his wife is from SJ.

The players involved weren't part of Bobby Mac's mention. He just mentioned the GM's were talking trade... the players are purely speculative, based on SJ's dissatisfaction with Marleau, his NTC (and big salary) kicking in next year, the Rivet connection with Saku, Montreal seeking a #1 center, and the two teams' positive trading relationship.

I don't really buy the trade per se, as it's a pretty big one, but I fully believe that both players could be available for the right price. Niether are untouchable. Whether that price is each other is purely speculative.

I thought it was pretty crazy at first, but as I mentioned in last night's GDT, if you rationalize it in a certain way it does become slightly plausible.

As a core deal, Marleau for Koivu could be a good starting point. Maybe we add something else to level the trade slightly, but in the age of cap restrictions, simply liking a certain player who fits the economic model could be all you need to pull the trigger (meaning, Doug Wilson might not care much about the age difference if Marleau has to go and he believes Saks will thrive in a no. 2 centre role).

Look, smart GM's are going to figure out how to make trades and help their teams. Doug Wilson is a very creative and progressive thinking hockey mind, and Gainey isn't afraid to make a move.

Maybe this doesn't work out, but I think a move is coming. Both teams could use a kick.

What I said on my regular appearance on the TEAM 990 on Monday morning is that even though it's next to impossible to make a trade in today's NHL, some teams – notably Anaheim for obvious reasons as well as the Sharks, who were destroyed by Buffalo on home ice on the weekend, and the Canadiens, who are in a swoon – are working extra hard to make something happen.

I noted that Sharks' GM Doug Wilson probably isn't sure what to make of his team – win almost all the time on the road; lose most of the time at home – but that he would be constantly evaluating it and if the Sharks continue to lay eggs like they did against Buffalo, it would only be a matter of time until we hear the next round of Patrick Marleau rumors.

I also noted that Canadiens' GM Bob Gainey is less likely to stand pat this season if the team continues to swoon than he was last season after Christmas when they hit the skids.

I never stated for a fact that the Sharks and Canadiens are talking trade with each other because I had no knowledge that they were in discussions.

My point was simply to say that several NHL teams – primarily Anaheim, San Jose and Montreal - are working extra hard to make something happen in an environment where it's almost impossible to get a deal done and maybe, just maybe, we will get some trade action prior to Christmas.

That's what I said. How it went from that to me supposedly saying Marleau-Bernier for Koivu-Ryder, which doesn't appear to make a whole lot of sense, is absolutely beyond my comprehension.

No it's not Bob. It's just impossible for the Leafs to pull a trade. Thornton was traded after the strike, and Gainey has dumped two high priced salaries since then too. It only takes concentration, knowledge, and will. The notion that the cap prevents blockbuster trades is baloney. It's poor GMs who prevent that.

Koivu for Marleau, as a core, makes sense - as EL also stated. Whether that means it will happen incorporates other factors that we may not know about. But off the top off my head, the salary movement seems to work, and the needs of each team seems to fit also.
