I guess we'll take it--any Avs win against Chris Mason is a good one.

Nashville appeared to score the first goal of the game when Bonk (I think) snuck one past Budaj, but it was waived off immediately and upheld after replay, even though the whistle clearly blows after the puck is already in. Chalk it up to what I think is a silly rule...the ref INTENDED to blow the whistle earlier because he lost sight of it, but didn't. Hmmmm...sure looked like a goal to me.
Anyway, goals from Smyth and Laperriere, the Avs get a desperately needed win on the road. |

I can't quite fathom this rule either... So you 'punish' a team that scores a legitimate goal just because, as a ref, you react too slowly? I'm not crazy about blowing the play dead when a ref loses sight of the puck, either... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

It's not a legitimate goal if the ref decides that the play is dead, though. That means the play is over, whether he managed to get the whistle into his mouth before it crossed the line or not. The whistle is just what the ref uses to indicate that the play is dead, not what determines whether the play is actually dead or not.
The sight rule is the way to have the play dead that makes the most sense. Otherwise, a puck could be under a goalie's leg or in his arm and everyone could sit there hammering away at it. Yeah, it results in some quick, odd-looking whistles from our perspective where we can still see the puck but if there's any better way of doing it, I'm all ears. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
