I guess the point of it all for me is this: I sometimes get conflicted at this time of year, this world junior season if you will.
I can do my job with ruthless efficiency. I can size up who's making it, who's not and when the tourney begins, I can and will dispense the criticism and the praise when and where I think it's required because that's my job and this World Junior Championship has grown into an event that is almost larger than life.
But beyond the clinical, cold and calculating nature of the job, my own experiences as a hockey parent -- knowing how hard all these kids have worked to get this far (and they are just kids at the end of the day) – allows me or perhaps forces me to feel their joy or share their disappointment.
This game always has been and always will be all about the heart, how it can fill you with so much joy and excitement that you think your heart is going to burst or how it can squeeze you and seize you to the point you think it's going to break.
And never is that range of emotion more apparent and on display for us all to see than on the day they name Canada's national junior team. |
