For the first time since Roberto Luongo joined the Vancouver Canucks, he will face the NHL's incumbent Vézina Trophy winner in Martin Brodeur

Storylines:

- As mentioned, Martin Brodeur faces Roberto Luongo for the first time since the Canucks acquired the latter. Luongo hasn't played Since Dec. 8, but declared himself ready for tonight's game. It remains to be seen how he handles the off-time.

- Brodeur, for his part, is on a tear, going 11-1-1 (1.68 GAA, 2 SO) in his last 13 starts. His totals are more modest all-time against the Canucks, though, at 6-8-0 (2.59 GAA, .891 SV%). Luongo's career as an Islander/Panther against the Devils is a rougher 4-13-0 (3.24 GAA, .907 SV%)

- the Devils haven't visited Vancouver since the waning days of 2001. Los Diablos actually haven't won a game in Vancouver since the Garth Snow days, in March 1999!

- Zach Parise is the Devils' leading scorer at 15-20-35. His multiples-of-5 scoring are countered with Henrik Sedin's multiples-of-6 scoring at 6-24-30.

- despite Luongo's return, the Canucks are, of course, without Brendan Morrison and Kevin Bieksa indefinitely, as well as Jeff Cowan (and I assume still Brad Isbister?). For New Jersey, I believe Cam Janssen is the only unhealthy scratch.

- interesting factoid: in his career, Markus Näslund has never scored a goal against the Devils. Though a number of the games would have come from his Pittsburgh days, in 17 games he has a paltry 0-5-5. To put things in perspective, Brad Isbister has 4-6-10 in 21 games. Or, for yet more perspective, Brian Gionta has 3 goals in 4 games against the Canucks, Patrik Elias 7 goals in 10 games.

1-0 Canucks after one on Aaron Miller's first goal since the Eisenhower administration. "I'm streaky too, watch out!" Laughing

Basically 1 goal on 0 chances. Keep it up, batting infinity!

Just tuning in.

Has the first period been a furious back and forth between Titans?

Devils generally carried the play, but scoring chances were limited for both teams. A fair amount of turnovers, but interestingly not all in the neutral zone.

Sedins couldn't get much going 'till a later shift when they looked very good.

Wow the Devils must be sleepy. Has to suck playing out of your time zone for a change. Wink

Going into the third with the always dangerous 4 goal lead.

Well that was quite the little offensive explosion! Brodeur's not having a great night, but really both the Miller and Linden goals were kind of flukey, and he had no chance on Naslund's. And he actually stopped Kesler, who just made an incredible second effort.

But for sure jetlag has to be kicking in with the Devils. When, like, Washington is a monster road trip for your team, coming out to Vancouver must really blindside them. The Canucks' unlikely domination of faceoffs probably has a lot to do with this -- I could see Devil centermen losing their timing a little as it starts to feel past midnight.

Nice to get Miller his first goal since I was but a young lad; fucking absolutely brilliant second goal of the night from Kesler - as a shutdown centerman, he's really coming into his own and contributing nicely to the offence, too; an unlikely goal from Linden; followed up by some nice passing plays between the Sedins and Naslund on the last two goals. I was beginning to worry about that line losing its touch - thankfully, they kept Mottau and White out there - they ended up a combined -8 on the night... Smile My boy Edler is another +2 - rock steady after flubbing the puck in the first 10 seconds of the game to give Luongo a chance to squash any hope of NJ scoring on the night... Very Happy

Other than that post that Madden hit, I don't think they really looked dangerous all night. No doubt fatigue was a contributing factor, but I think Vancouver was nearly perfect in its own zone.

Some ridiculous phantom calls in the 3rd period to even things out on the PP - but probably also calmed some of the stupid stuff that NJ was getting into... Probably frustrated. Good, classy decisions by AV to hold back his top PP unit after the game was well out of reach - I think he only had Naslund as the only PP regular in the last three opps. Would have been nice to get Naslund the hattie but it wouldn't have gained anything.

Yeah, that was one of the less effective sticking-up-for-teammates moments. Laughing Good on Burrows, but I don't think Vishnevski is going to be seeing his teenage frame in his nightmares or anything. Laughing

But yes, excellent game. Finally an eastern team learns about air-travel-with-movies and the Canucks take full advantage. If not for a couple flukey goals, I wonder if the Canucks show the same degree of control, since they really weren't dominating the flow until they got up by 3 or so.

Both Näslund goals very nice, especially the first (tic-tac-toe) one. Kesler's second effort was remarkable -- he scored that from behind the goal line.

As tCL mentioned, Colin White had a rough game for New Jersey -- always seemed to be around when the red light was on.

Luongo full value for the shutout, although he didn't have a particularly difficult night apart from a couple moments in the first period. The Devils need some serious target practice -- they made the Canucks look like sharpshooters with the accuracy they were displaying.

I'm glad the Little Québécoise left her laptop behind when she left for Europe so that I could watch this one on Sopcast. Smile

An interesting perspective of this game from a Devils blogger and part-time Nucks fan.

Never realized how similar Vancouver and NJ were, at least stat-wise.
