Stomping on Jarko Ruutu's foot with his skate tonight......what a dumb ass....this guy needs to go sell cars or drink himself into oblivion just as long as whatever he does isn't in the NHL.

Thankfully Ruutu wasn't hurt.

Simon certainly is an asshat.

That was one of the ugliest things I've ever seen in sports. Thanks CBC for zooming in on it and playing it in slo-motion (!).

They were talking 30 games for him. I don't see why they can't give this re-offender the season.

Simon's a proud warrior. He was being goaded all night. When he hit that puke in the side of the head with his stick...

er...

wrong person ...

Simon has been essentially given a leave of absence by the Islanders.

Well they are announcing his punishment tomorrow! I get the feeling this is it for Simon. I'm betting a record suspension followed shortly by a retirement announcement....

Interesting article in the Edmonton Journal, trying to stave off the inevitable moral panic:

Dan Barnes wrote:
The hysterical refrain will be exactly the same when the next yahoo does something stupid and dangerous on the ice: players have lost respect for one another.

Sorry. Not buying it. The sky over my head is not falling. The malfeasance of a thuggish few is not properly wrapped up in a blanket statement concerning the actions of more than 700 players during 1,300 regular-season and playoff games in any given year.

Here is Simon's rap sheet:

Dan Barnes wrote:
Simon has been suspended more or less at regular three-year intervals. He first drew the attention of the league brass in 1994 when his 15-year career as a moderately skilled enforcer was in its infancy. He slashed Dennis Vial in the head and sat out five games. He stayed out of trouble until 1997 (three games for addressing Mike Grier with a racial slur), then was called on the carpet in 2000 (one playoff game for cross-checking Peter Popovic in the throat) and 2001 (two games for elbowing Anders Eriksson) and twice in 2004 (two games each for cross-checking Ruslan Fedotenko and kneeing Sergei Zubov). The Ruutu incident will provoke his second suspension of 2007, as he was banished for 25 games last spring for two-handing Ryan Hollweg.

Funny, Harmfuljays & I were talking about Chris Simon's lack of hockey sense a mere few days before this event.

He wouldn't fight Gino Odjick back in the day!

Mad

The National Hockey League has suspended New York Islanders forward Chris Simon for 30 games for stepping on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu last weekend.
"There were several factors that were considered in imposing the largest suspension in NHL history for an on-ice incident," explained NHL Vice President Colin Campbell.

Short memories... Weren't they pitching Bertuzzi's suspension as the longest (since it was over a lockout season)?

The suspension in context (apparently the TSN guys think Simon stepped on his leg)

I wonder what Eddie Shore, Paiment, or M. Richard would get in the NewNHL

I don't think so. I've only heard Bertuzzi referred to in the number of games that he missed, as it should be.
