EL, what's the story with the marlins and their 20-mil payroll? If everyone can afford a 70-mil payroll, is he just raking in the dough?

It's a 10M payroll now. Laughing

Well, Loria gets about 30M-40M in revenue sharing, and every team got a 30M cheque from MLBtv.com. I'm figuring none of this includes TV and radio revenue. I'd say just by existing as one of the thirty teams he gets about 80-90M.

Now he loses money at the gate, but if he gave even a half-assed effort at not being an asshole they could probably get 20 000 fans a game.

Essentially the format is there for him to be successful, and if he isn't it's his own fault.

Padres get Jim Edmonds for a minor leaguer. Loved Jim back in the day but his time has past. I guess he'd be a better option then Cameron whos another suspension waiting to happen.

Dbacks trade for Haren and trade away Valverde...

EL thoughts? 6 minor leaguers, 3 lefties. Not sure of quality.

We'll see if Randy can stay healthy, the D backs may now have the best rotation in the NL.

The A's won't be competitive for two years, but they got two really good blue chippers in Gonzalez (big left-handed power hitter with great patience) and Anderson (lefty starter). I like Chris Carter as a power hitting 1B too. The A's may as well have a big firesale now.

For the DBacks, they traded the whole farm, but they have Haren and Webb under contract for the next 4 years or so. If Owings and Scherzer take big steps next season, watch out.

The Friars stole Jim Edmonds. They gave up an ok prospect and is only a one-year rental.

Merry Xmas, here's Jayson Stark's must-read funny stats of 2007:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3165287

Quote:
This Is Modern Managing Dept.: In an Aug. 21 game against the Royals, hyperactive White Sox magician Ozzie Guillen used five different pitchers -- in a span of five pitches. We kid you not. Ehren Wassermann got a fly-ball out. Mike Myers gave up a single on the next pitch. Ryan Bukvich allowed a single on the next pitch. Matt Thornton got a double play on the next pitch. Bobby Jenks started the next inning with pitch No. 5.

El, big mistake by the Cubs or is he finished?

http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=225883&hubname=

One million plus 4.5 in potential bonuses seems like no risk, all reward.

Not too many guys come back from labrum surgery. He won't be ready until June at the earliest.

I agree with the no risk, all reward assessment
1 million in today's MLB is nothing, barely a cover charge
I'm sure the 4.5 million in incentives, if he's done he won't reach them

Doesn't seem like a bad gamble, but Towers needs to get some speed and athleticism into his lineup...he's way too in love with aging power hitters, and that doesn't serve him well at Petco. If they just had some more bats they could easily take the NL West, which may very well be the most competitive division in the majors.

Apparently the Rox, having struck out in the Tadahito Iguchi sweepstakes (yes I realize that's a bit silly to say, but true nonetheless) are apparently looking to Marcus Giles, who just came off a thoroughly horrid season and has been on the decline for a while now. There's also the in-house option of Jayson Nix. Seems silly they traded Jamey Carroll to the Tribe in a cost-cutting move, it's not like 2 million was a terribly exorbitant amount of money to spend on a utility guy...oh well.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. The problem is the doc will probably not know what he's dealing with until he gets in there. You'll spend about six months getting back to full motion afterwards.

BTW, labrums can't be healed through rehab and exercise, since you probably tore something.

I know you play baseball, so playing with a torn labrum is a bad idea. Have you gotten it checked?

Saw the specialist twice, he now wants an MRI. Says that will show a torn labrum if there is one.

I either have chronic rotator cuff tendonitis (physio) or a torn labrum (surgery). He wants me to start on physio and hope to see some improvement. I can lift weights, even lateral raises, with no problem, so he's suspicious of torn labrum. Throwing is the problem all right - the motion of cocking back is fine, but throwing is agonizingly painful.

I had it 18 months ago, and thought the offseason would heal it. First practice back this year and it hurt, so I played the year hurt.

Realistically I wouldn't get surgery even if I needed it until after this year, so it's another year of "playing through it". Joining a new team and having to prove myself yet again is not good timing, but at least it's my lumber (er... aluminum Laughing ) that makes me valuable. 6 months for an MRI, 10-12 months for the surgery...

I hope you're the DH then, because as EL said, a torn labrum won't heal with rest or therapy - and you very well could increase the tear.

I had some problems with my rotator cuff a few years back, but my symptoms were the opposite of yours - couldn't lift over my head, finally tried lifting my arm over my head with no weight involved and it was the same -
some pain, but much weakness bringing my arm up laterally or vertically.
It turned out to be shredded capsillar ligaments, so I had to do therapy with minuscule amounts of weight, rubber bands, etc.

You probably will need surgery on the other hand (if it's a torn labrum)
Good luck with this man

Yeah, we'll see how physio goes. I'm not expecting anything at all. I'm betting it's torn labrum as well, which means if all goes well I might be healthy in the summer of '09 Evil or Very Mad

Never. Besides, I'm likely to be playing 1B on the new squad (the previous one got kicked out of the league semi final, promptly left the field, hit the stands, and cracked open a cold one... or five Laughing ), so it's not such a big deal.

At least either way I'm not making it worse. If it's chronic tendonitis throwing is gonna hurt. If it's a torn labrum it's torn. Until I hear something worse than "well it's not going to heal if you do that", I'm playing.

Hitting is fun. Hitting is what I do well. The rest I could give a shit about, as long as I'm not costing us wins Very Happy

Check out Yu Darvish, the best pitcher in Japan right now. He's only 21 and under control of his team for another 5 years or so, but there's talk the Ham Fighters might post him next year, because his posting fee could be twice what Daisuke's team got.

Any numbers on him?
Some nasty offspeed stuff, but I also noticed a lot of floating changeups for strikes that would would be killed in MLB .
I didn't see much heat (topping out in the mid '80s I'm guessing)
He gets a lot of strikes off the plate, and that's what got Dice-K in trouble
ie too much nibbling with 2 strikes, batters started taking with 2 strikes

Fastest I saw there was 149 kph, which isn't terrible, but it's not going to scare MLB hitters either.

Nasty junk, but he's getting a LOT of borderline calls from blue. Tighten up the zone on him and we'll see. Plus, the talent over there isn't particularly good, a few studs excepted...
