My first ever goes to...
Equilibrium... This movie is so transcendantly bad, it gives new depths to extreme badness... Imagine the worst parts of The Matrix, cobbled together with elements of V for Vendetta, steal liberally from 1984 then just for good measure, throw up all over the script, and this is what you might get, if you get past the chunky bits... So bad, I can't even bring myself to mentally regurgitate even a smidgeon of a synopsis... For the love of all that is holy, good and just in this world, just avoid this mess at all cost. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

30 Days of Night
What better movie to see on Halloween?
I really liked this one because it had a new spin on the most tired horror genre there is--the vampire flick. In an age where shows like "Buffy" are making bloodsuckers commonplace, sympathetic, even comical in ways, the film succeeds in making vampires something truly monstrous and terrifying again. It's not a masterpiece, in fact there's a lot of B-movie over-the-top-ness to it all, especially the absolutely crazy amount of gore in this flick, but all in all I was glued to the screen last night.

Mr. Brooks,
Kevin Costner has an addiction problem, using the 12 step method to keep him from killing people.
Interesting take on the serial killer angle as high rolling business man, and father tries to deal with his compulsions.

I'm usually not a fan of dumb christmas movies but this one was much better than most all I've ever seen. Ranks right up there with Die Hard as fas as Christmas movies go.
Mild Spoiler:
My favorite scene involved a "Siblings Anonymous" meeting with some rather infamous "siblings" such as Steven Baldwin, Frank Stallone and Roger Clinton _________________

28 Weeks Later (2007)
This sequel, for me at least, was not as good as the first, but still better than many others out there... It's worth renting.

No Country For Old Men
Being a Cormac McCarthy fan I had to see it. The Cohen brothers did a remarkable job with the characters, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, and especially Javier Bardem. My only complaint would be as a fan of the book that Bardem steals the show as the villan which I think causes most of the audience that never read the book to miss the main point of the story (the Sheriff struggling to deal with violence of today's world). I say this because I went to the movie with my wife who literally said as we were walking out of the movie "WTF was the point of that?". Definitely worth seeing, if I could have figured out the damn puck thing I would have given 4 pucks. I would go to see it again and probably will buy the DVD when it is available. |

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
4 pucks
I got to go to an advance screening of this flick last night and there are some scenes that rank amongst the funniest shit of the last several years. Anything in this movie with Tim Meadows is gold. From the jews that control showbiz to PCP trips this flick has it all. Jack Black as Paul McCartney seems a little weird, but of course it comes with hillarious results. See this movie! |

Saw some DVD releases this week:
Stardust
Absolutely loved this film, a fairy tale/fantasy that never takes itself too seriously, equal parts whimsy and twisted humor, as only the mind of Neil Gaiman can supply. It's a criminal shame this movie did so poorly at the box office stateside. Even Claire Danes, one of my least favorite actresses, won me over.

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry
Typical Adam Sandler fare, a few laughs but nothing I'd consider true comic genius. And while I'm not necessarily complaining, if you're going to have Jessica Biel playing a bit role to show off her magnificent assets, you may as well go the whole nine yards, don't try to pawn her off on us as a lawyer, that's like trying to sell Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist in a Bond flick! Who would do something like that!? Oh, wait...

I am Legend:
Awesome movie! Will Smith's best maybe! Must see!
Walk Hard:
I laughed my ass off! This was better than Talladega Nights, Not as good as Borat or Superbad, but pretty damn good! Right up there with those 3! _________________

Can't quite agree on "I am Legend" even though Will Smith really has become quite the actor and carries this film through a thoroughly mediocre script. Couldn't STAND the bad CGI on the mutant creatures though. I read they tried using actors in makeup and it looked terrible. Someone should've given a call to Neil Marshall, who made similar-looking creatures in "The Descent" with only makeup effects that were far more terrifying. Again though there were some great scenes, like the flashbacks and the scene where Smith's character has to venture into that darkened building to get his dog. I was a little disheartened to see the movie had made the ending far less bleak than the book had. Anyway I'd give it 2 pucks instead of 4, worth seeing if you're bored, but not a must-see IMO by any means.
Anyway saw a TON of movies over the holiday break, the other one I saw in theatres was way more enjoyable.
National Treasure 2
Yes, it's typical Disney-fied fare, not a whole lot of death and destruction, the hero wins the day, gets the girl, all that stuff and then some, but I liked this one way more than the first, which I found to be a bit boring. A lot more of the puzzle-solving and old-world gadgetry I loved in the first installment, though Nicholas Cage is starting to look even weirder than usual. At least we got Diane Kruger to look at in this one. Anyway for what it's worth this is a great one to take the kids to, but if you're looking for something less formulaic, avoid it.

Charlie Wilson's War

A movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. Tom Hanks plays congressman Charlie Wilson who ultimately was a do nothing congressman that became involved in the Russo/Afghan war.
A good blend of comedy with an important message that money rules the world. I personally think its a must see for every american citizen that wants to wash their hands of Iraq. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
BY FAR the darkest Tim Burton film yet, and without a lot of that ironic campiness you usually see in his other flicks. This one was a tough one to stomach on a variety of levels, but you have to give Burton and crew credit for making a really fuckin' gory and unflinching version of the stage play, and quite possibly the most unique musical of all time. The score is really lush and tends to drown out the performers from time to time. Johnny Depp is as usual, brilliant, as is everyone else in the cast (best performance by far is Sacha Baron Cohen playing a bit part). This is one that might take you a while to appreciate, let alone stomach, as everything, from the violence, horror, and even the musical numbers themselves, are extremely intense.

Oh boy.

Probably my favorite Clancy book, and one of my favs period. Without Remorse is also the Clancy book that I always thought would translate the best into a movie.
Hopefully they don't fuck it up Man I hope that they don't screw with the timeline as they did with the other Clancy books-turned-movies. Kelly has to be someone young and big. I still think Willem Dafoe was a bad choice just on how he looks in Clear and Present Danger. I don't remember Liev Schreiber in Sum of All Fears at all. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Well I've added it to my netflix queue....... The reason I stated as I did is because in the movie Charlie Wilson's War....he warns the politicians to continue to support the rebuilding of the country and to not completely abandon them as we have done repeatedley....there is even a sequence where they explain the threats of not educating the young people of Afghanistan (1 million Afghans were killed in the War along with 1.2 Million disabled and 3 million wounded) Yeah....hindsight is 20/20 but I thought it was a good lesson for folks that want to leave Iraq high and dry. We continue to use countries in a very deceptive and political way. Its a good message to take away from seeing the flick if nothing at all. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

So this morning I had a doctor's appointment, and the movie network was showing Little Miss Sunshine. Now I know it's been out for a while now, but I just had to say that this was one of the best movies of 2006.
Alan Arkin totally deserved the Oscar he received for his role as the heroin snorting grandpa. When he comes into the dining room and see's that they're having "the fucking chicken" for dinner, I giggled myself silly. I think everyone in the movie was just phenominal.
Last night Josh and I watched a movie I had never even heard of called Alpha Dog. It's based on the true story of this drug dealing teenager in California who through a total coincidence of looking for a guy who owed him money, happened upon the guy's little brother, and grabbed him to force the guy to pay him back. The kid who was kidnapped goes along with everything thinking his brother will pay the guy back, and it turns into a 3 day party for him with his kidnappers.
It stars Emile Hirsch and Justin Timberlake, and for the Justin-factor alone, I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually a really good movie. Josh and I ended up talking for a long time afterwards about fear and retaliation, and bad decisions and responsilbility, and how sometimes things might seem impossible, but there are always solutions. I would recommend this movie.
