Living his hockey dream
Nightmare turns into a dilly in Philly as Flyers play host to scammed boy, 13

By DON PEAT, SUN MEDIA

CAMPBELLFORD -- Mitch Stevens had his hockey-loving heart broken by a con artist, but the Philadelphia Flyers helped ice the pain.

The 13-year-old is still in awe of his first hockey game -- in Philadelphia courtesy of the Flyers -- where he got to meet the players, ride the Zamboni and get his own jersey.

It was the stuff of a dreams -- even for a Leafs fan -- but it all began with a nightmare last year.

Mitch and his family were scammed last June by a woman staying at Woodland Estate Cottage Resort near Campbellford.

The woman told the boy she grew up with hockey players Jordan and Eric Staal in Thunder Bay, had worked with the nearby team, the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, and was good friends with former Pete and current Flyer, Steve Downie. She promised a meeting, tickets, a signed stick and a dinner with his hockey heroes.

It turned out those promises were as good as her promises to pay for the cottage she was renting, Mitch's mom, Sharon, said.

When the lies fell apart the woman was hauled away by Northumberland OPP. The family was out some money for the rental and Mitch was out his hockey dreams.

That is until the Flyers head office read his story in the Peterborough Examiner.

The team got in touch with the family, and Steve Downie even called him.

But the best gifts were to come. They also offered free tickets if the family could make it down to the City of Brotherly Love.

Earlier this hockey season, Sharon and dad Ken took Mitch to Philadelphia.

"It was great, lots of fun," Mitch said. "It makes a good out of a bad."

The left-wing for the Stirling Blues even got to meet his favourite player, Flyer Daniel Briere.

"He's kind of small like me and he scores lots of goals," Mitch said.

TICKETS PRETTY GOOD

He also got a tour of the Comcast Center and was strapped into the passenger seat of the Zamboni to ride around the rink. The tickets were pretty good, too, Mitch admits, they had box seats to watch the Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2.

Along with lots of photos from the weekend, Mitch has an autographed jersey with "Stevens No.1" on the back hanging on his wall.

The lifelong Leaf fan admits he favours Philly a little more now. So does mom.

"They are the most amazing team to do what they did for Mitchell," Sharon said.

Someone might want to tell Don Peat that failing to deliver when "[s]he promised a meeting, tickets, a signed stick and a dinner with his hockey heroes" is not a scam. The kid didn't lose a thing except a little faith in humanity.

And so the parents were jilted on the rent, but I don't really see how that makes the papers. Laughing
