There's an audio link for the press conference there as well.
There's been a lot of talk about Price maybe not getting much playing time here in January (easy sked, not much back-to-back) and Gainey is apparently open to seeing him go to Hamilton if he is going to stay on the bench for long stretches, but there seems to be no plan to make a permanent Halak for Price switch. Price has been pretty cold as of late and Huet has definitely returned to the lineup with a vengence. It's good to note that Price did start 19 games in the first half, which is a lot. I had him pegged for between 30-35 NHL starts with maybe a few AHL starts scattered when the schedule was soft.
Interesting that he's open to early discussions with Huet. If Huet is signed, Halak is for sure trade bait. It would be a large cap hit for goaltending if we did retain him, so hopefully the basis of any negotiation is more Gerber/Emery than Fernandez/Vokoun range. _________________ "Oh my God. TSN's roundup: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=226677&hubname=
Interesting quote about looking for outside help on faceoffs.
I don't know what Gainey expected w/r/t faceoffs. Younger players are almost always worse at it than vets, and Smoke was no specialist in that regard despite people's insistence that he was. He was below 50% last year.
Some other notes: Kovalev has been the best PP performer in the league this season, and he also draws amongst the highest amount of penalties in the league. Gainey doesn't touch on it, but it's on James Mirtle's mid-season round-up here. Gainey does have some good things to say about Kovalev's resurgence, and says that no one deserves more credit than Alex does himself for it.
It should be noted that in the game vs. the Rangers on Dec. 30, with Koivu out with the flu, Kovalev wore the C.
I was trying to figure out who are MVP so far this year was, and kind of mused that it was the player that drew the most penalties. I think these stats clear up just who that is... by a mile. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Faceoffs - Federov if he is available at the deadline would be a great third line centre for a prospect and a pick... _________________ The crowd once again showed its IQ level when it shouted ``U-S-A, U-S-A,'' during the fight. Their hero, Downie, is from Newmarket, Ont. |

As you all know, I can blab on and on, so I will.
One of the biggest secrets of this year's edition of the Habs is that they're quietly becoming one of the league's top offensive clubs. They currently sit in the Top 5 in goals for in the entire NHL. They are a ways behind teams such as Detroit, Ottawa, and Carolina, but they are at the forefront of the "rest of the pack". Having a #1 ranked PP helps a lot, but the team is at least keeping pace in even strength situations (hovering around even).
It's the PK that is the number one reason we're not pulling away from the pack. Being better at faceoffs would surely help a little in this regard. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Amazing what a difference a year makes. This year's solution: More enigmatic Russians! _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Here's an fun stat: Goals Against On Ice/60 minutes. Todd White, Kovalchuk, and the Lightning are absolutely owning the league in that category.

Man - I can't remember the last time we had three strong goaltenders. Gainey deserves a lot of credit. Chips is a little puzzling, although it does give them a bit more offense, Chips more playing time and it allows them to get a look at Locke. _________________ The fans represent the soul of the organization. We don't need another offensive player. We need PKers.
I'm not too impressed with that swap, but in the grand scheme of things, it's pretty unimportant.
I guess Locke deserves a game after missing his NHL debut because his luggage/equipment didn't arrive at JFK.
Price got the flu just after Huet had the flu. Hmm... _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Defintely. Locke leads the Dogs in points and has the 2nd highest +/-... and most aren't in the pluses. He might be able to bring a better two-way game than Chips and might also help our faceoffs. _________________ The fans represent the soul of the organization. This is their team.
