I think this is an excellent pick up for Carolina.....and not much of a gamble.

Stats wise they are comparable (except that SS doesn't play the PK).

Don't forget that Laviolette has been with him before during better years.

He might surprise some folks.

Yeah, I don't get it either, I thought Boston would have been the only team who may have claimed him, which then would automatically have made him the best player in the NHL.

Harmy, in what way are they statistically comparable? Samsonov peaked in '01 and has been awful since he left the Oilers. 4 assists in 24 games this year vs 30 points in 36 games for Williams, whose best years have been the past 2 seasons. He's a force on the PK and the PP.

IMO Carolina needs far, far more help on the defensive side of the puck and Samsonov, for the $900,000 cap hit, will do nothing for them in that respect.

I provided the links.

I suppose we will have to disagree then. I think he can excel if paired with Brindamour or Staal.

Bates Battaglia excelled alongside Brind'Amour, so I don't think talent is a pre-requisite for that role.

Well, I'm sure he's cleared waivers by now, so it looks like a dead issue

edit: ok, just checked it out, and I'm more confused than ever Confused

He's been assigned to the Hawks minor league team

so he had to clear waivers twice just to be sent down once???

that doesn't make any sense

He only had to clear once (the way down) to be assigned. The second clear (supposedly the way back up) was to see if anyone wanted him at 1/2 price. Once that questioned was answered, they assigned him to their AHL team.

Sask, I'm afraid I will never figure out this double-secret probation, extra pickles waiver process ... it makes no sense

1) Sammie is placed on waivers to be assigned to AHL
2) 12-31-07 he clears waivers
3) 1-1-08 instead of being assigned to AHL, he is placed on re-entry waivers
4) 1-3-08 he clears re-entry waivers, but instead of being brought up (as in re-entry) he is assigned to AHL team that he should have went to after the first waive. Uh, what?
5) 1-8-07 ....5 days after he CLEARS waivers, he is claimed off said cleared waivers by Carolina Confused
OK, pretty much in any sport, once you clear waivers you can't be claimed
Or was this the double-secret probation, triple threat option sweep left on 2

Are you sure no one want's this....I'm only gonna throw it away....
So for all that, Chicago still has to pay Sammie 3/4 of his salary while he plays for someone else ....sounds like something the Red Sox would do

I was dropping off a toilet at my brother's house when I heard "Samsonov" from the TV behind me...I turned to see Sammy weaving around Black & Gold pylons, threading tape to tape passes like back in the day

I think Cullen's injury got Rutherford thinking/drinking a bit too much and he asked the Hawks to place Sammy on re-entry again to claim him. Cullen's injury wasn't diagnosed fully the first time Sammy was on waivers and now that it has he became interested.

Sammy had one good game last year, too.

Yeah I figured that had something to do with Carolina's need
I just don't don't see how they can re-place him on re-entry waivers again,
after he already cleared re-entry waivers

Also, if clearing re-entry waivers, don't you have to bring the player back up to the show (ie, re-entry?)

In theory, but apparently not in practice. Laughing

And again, Chuck... Bates Battaglia. That's all that needs to be said. Laughing

Hmm he's a -5.............with 7 points. I still think its a good pick up. He wasn't brought aboard for his defensive prowess.

Yeah I'd rather have him than Keith Aucoin or Brandon Nolan playing

This whole team blows dead bears. I wish they'd trad'em all away for picks and prospects.

Now where are you Samsonov detractors?

24 games 11 goals 10 assists 21 points and a plus 10

A great pickup and my candidate for Masterson.

I'm still here. Anyone could put up those numbers with Brind'Amour and Cole. It's how he does without them that matters most.

he's picked up 11 points since Brindamour went down.

Erik Cole? Gimme a break...you're grasping at straws.

Carolina makes Matt Cullen look good. I'm just saying... it's their system.

Puh-leaze on the Masterton consideration. You don't get that for turning from a whiny bitch into a player again. If that was the case, Mike Comrie should've won that about 4 times already.

Good for him that he might have stopped being a bitch and may be getting his career back on track. He's certainly filled in admirably on offense while other Canes went down.
