Storylines

- a tale of two Italian goaltenders. Roberto Luongo takes on the team who traded him in order to make Rick DiPietro the team's new top goalie prospect, well before either of their development curves could be ascertained.

- in addition to the 1982 Cup finals, the Canucks also have a bit more of brief playoff history with the Isles, losing 2-0 in a best-of-three series in the first round of the 1976 playoffs.

- the Canucks have recalled defenseman Nathan McIver from Manitoba, which is bad news as it coincides with Alexander Edler leaving practice with back spasms yesterday.

- the Canucks' blueline is already depleted, missing Mattias Öhlund with Mysterious Head Area Syndrome (MHAS), as well as the long-term injuries to Brendan Morrison and Kevin Bieksa. Brad Isbister is also experiencing back spasms, but may play. Jeff Cowan remains out for at least another game, while Aaron Miller, despite a minor injury, is expected to go. Unless the McIver callup was for his benefit, which we can all hope for with all due respect.

- the Islanders are missing Radek Martinek (leg), Shawn "Supernewt" Bates (hip), Aaron Johnson (knee), and preseason king Jon Sim (knee).

- the Isles are playing their second game in 2 nights, being blanked 4-0 last night by the Oilers.

- despite the excitement of Miroslav Satan recording his 666th career point not long ago, as the above may indicate, the Isles are not big-time scorers. Their 98 goals-for are the lowest in the Eastern Conference. Bill Guerin is the biggest goal-scorer with 14, while fellow free-agent signing Mike Comrie is the team scoring leader with 33 points.

- the Isles do have the league's 6th-best penalty-killing, however. And they are marginally better than the Canucks at coming from behind (.286 to .154 when trailing after one, and .105 to .000 when trailing after two). Both teams are undefeated when leading after two.

- the Canucks have gotten at least a point in 13 consecutive home games, although the Islanders have a weird history of ending good Canuck streaks despite not playing very often. Their last game was all the way last Thursday when they blanked the Isles' crosstown rivals 3-0.

- the Isles' last game in Vancouver was March 11, 2003, when they fell 4-3 to Peter Skudra and the Canucks. The last time the teams played at all was an 8-1 Canuck romp on Long Island during the 2005-06 season.

- just throwing this out there, but the Canucks' combined score against the other two NYC teams this year is 8-0.

Interesting lineup.

It looks good on paper Rolling Eyes

They've had rest and practice...and time to reflect on their play of late.

I'm hoping for a good, solid effort tonight with lots of jump.

We have a couple games in hand over Calgary. No reason we can't regain the NW lead.

Missed this one on TV; listened to part of the broadcast online... Add SO Specialist to my boy Edler's resume... Cool

Sounds like they dominated but couldn't get more than two past DiPietro.

Copied from CC:...(it seems to be the new trend Laughing )

We looked almost awesome !

Luongo was having a bad night...finally. Both goals against were undeserved.

The team though, with the exception of Naslund, is playing lights out.
It's like the Rangers game in reverse.

Even Nazzy was good in the first period, and scored a good goal, but he stopped rushing to the puck after the first and just waved at a great scoring chance later in the game instead of moving his feet..
God knows why he was in the shootout. He looked almost as disinterested as he did last year when he left the puck behind.
Maybe he got injured ?

But it was great to see this team finally carry Bobby Lou for a change...

...and they let it go to a shootout win so he wouldn't be embarrassed.

Raymond adds a new dynamic with the twins.
It's still too early to see if it will turn into an offensive force but I agree with AV that three Sedins on a line might be one too many.
Just the two of them, with Raymond, were more than the Isles could handle.
They were conducting a clinic out there.

Edler was brilliant.

Pyatt had a great game and was looking like a power forward on a lot of rushes.

Cookie missed a wide open net but laid a great hit on Satan.

I'm a huge Burrows fan but I didn't think he was our best forward tonight.
Lots of hustle, as always, but his puck control wasn't great.
He did get involved in a number of good scoring chances though.

Linden !!!!!!! Captain Clutch.
Four for Five on the shootout now !

Fun game to watch.
Once again...it was great to see the team carry Bobby Lou for a change.

And give the devil his due...(no, not Satan)...DiPietro was incredible tonight.

Well, it's a good thing Edler was in the lineup after all...! (How did he come to be "tCL's boy," anyway? Laughing The entire fanbase has raved about him since literally his first NHL game).

I'm loving Linden's shootout prowess, and what's crazy is that Luongo stopped Sillinger. For those who don't know, Sillinger has been the breakaway king for pretty much his entire NHL career. He has admitted he "only has one move" (which is basically a straight shot under the crossbar -- more or less what Linden does in the shootout). I obviously didn't see last night's game -- is that what he tried?

Näslund on the shootout is purely a confidence thing. He is more than capable one-on-one in a game situation (in fact, he's arguably the best Canuck forward one-on-one... there's no one I want more in close during a game, though Daniel is close). Going in slowly as he always does clearly doesn't help him.

That said, I'm glad Vigneault put him out there... you can't just write him off and eliminate him as a shootout possibility for the rest of the season. That just becomes a waste of assets... it's better to let him try a few things and get more comfortable (I wonder how much they practice the shootout and, if so, how much he tends to score?). Remember the heat Crawford took for not sending Gretzky in during the 1998 Olympics? He wasn't the best at breakaways either, but the reasoning is that you don't let one of your biggest talents stay on the bench when you need a miracle. One of these days Näslund has to come through -- law of averages, at least.

Edler was a curious choice which clearly paid off... it's still Salo (and Öhlund when he's back) that I'd like to see amon the D-corps. Salo is excellent one-on-one in game situations but, like Näslund, I suppose this may fail to translate in the shootout. However, he has the X-factor in that he can wind up for a slapshot (the goalies don't know that it's Edler who won the hardest shot competition!), scare the bejeezus out of a goaltender, and then choose his move from there.

Somewhere in here (or perhaps the former offthepost.net) and prior to the start of the season, there was a thread about which player we thought would have a breakout year or something... I chose Edler, Luvah chose Shannon with Weaver as his second pick (or vice versa)... I can't recall who picked Kesler.

It wasn't his shot that AV wanted for the SO; in one of the Province articles this morning, I read that the other players had told AV that Edler looked great on the SO in practice...

Quote:
"No, nothing scares him and it didn't when I called his name in the shootout," head coach Alain Vigneault said. "He just grinned. Then, a couple guys on the bench said 'he's going to score.' And he did."

Edler added another chapter to his fairytale rookie season Tuesday.

Not only did he finish a plus-1 to give him an eye-popping plus-18 rating on the season, he proved that he's got moves.

On the penalty shot, Edler approached DiePietro meticulously, like a surgeon, knowing exactly what he was going to do even if he can't remember the last time he took a penalty shot (he was back in Sweden near the Arctic Circle at the time, he said).

"The guys kept telling me he's been real good in practice," Vigneault said. "They said every time he goes down he's got moves and he scores."

I'm not sure about Salo or Ohlund for the SO - although I don't mind the idea of Salo taking a big slapper (a la Ralston) just to give the freeze the goalie for even a second... Then follow him Edler who can take the big wind up and make a move... Wink

With Salo, I'd want the faked slapshot more than him actually taking one -- he doesn't have the accuracy that a guy like Rolston does. But Salo has very good moves in close -- I think when combined with freezing the goalie from the slapper (which he would actually take from time to time to keep goalies honest) he would score more often than not.

Öhlund has also demonstrated excellent in-close skills, with both a Lumme-esque wrist shot and some pretty good hands. Plus he's an all-around confident, smart guy, so I wouldn't mind seeing it.

they also showed the last OT GWG between Vancouver and NYI .. 1997 , Almo to Lumme pinching in from the high point , carries it straight towards the goal , to his back hand ... back of the net!

Canucks should've won by 5 last night at the least. Dominated a tired inferior team.

hey where the heck is Clitoris18 anyways?
