And in keeping with the Philly Philosophy - Eager was traded away a week later. _________________ The fans represent the soul of the organization. This is their team. It may not have been the fight -- he was probably just diagnosed with a serious disease. _________________

I keep rewatching the video to see if I am missing something. Calling this a "sucker punch" seems highly overstated. Ya Downie got an arm free but he was being held by a linesman too - he was down on his knees and in a headlock! This is not an effective punching position or a good vantage point to see if Blake was fully tied up or not. I think Blake's eye looking so bad afterwards is either a total fluke or has something to do with Blake's lack of skin color. And it's not like Downie skated up to Blake and cracked him - it happened in a scrum that I believe Blake initiated (not sure how they got tied up back there?). Seems like the extra 2mins was very fair punishment.
Blake should really be upset because it looks like Downie may outscore him for the rest of the season. |
I knew Karl Rove would eventually turn up somewhere...
Anyway, I didn't think the punch was much either. It's the sort of thing you let the players police. Let Belak kick the snot out of Downie - problem solved. While Clarke's bullshit "he didn't hit him good" is no defense, it also pales in comparison to the bi-weekly thuggery we have come to expect from the Flyers. For that reason only I would have gone after the team and coach for what Downie did, not he nature of his particular act...

Hey swflyers - your team has put not one but two of our player out with serious, serious head injuries. You have the audacity to continue to defend them and suggest that they've done nothing wrong.
I stick my neck out here and catch a lot of shit, much of it deserved. It takes a lot to offend me. For the record, your irrational pro-hooligan diatribe has offended me... |

I don't get the reference. Are you sure you know who Karl Rove is?

I see your point. And I thought Jones, Hartnell and the Flyers got off really easily for what I thought were dispicable hits. But even if the team is under scrutiny I don't think Downie did anything worth going after - Chuck Liddell couldn't even get much of a punch off from his knees while in a headlock. |

Parros is a scorer now didn't you know?
I especially liked the 69 that Belak gave him at the end.
The Winter classic was a joke IMO however there's a thread on that already.
I am sure there will be OTP outrage at this incident because the majority of the nancies will wish they were the ones under Belak. Honor and Integrity at its finest! _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

the knee on knee was particularily dirty. The punch though late, both dudes had their gloves off.
Belacking breaths through his nose... _________________ The crowd once again showed its IQ level when it shouted ``U-S-A, U-S-A,'' during the fight. Their hero, Downie, is from Newmarket, Ont. |

I guess Belak could of attempted to get out of the way but he didn't stick it out. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Either way there are at least 6 Philly incidents in the last 4 months that are worse. |

Still highly confused. How was that spin doctoring and why would I spin doctor something about Downie or the Flyers? I don't care much about either, I just thought the uproar over that half punch was bs - which you seem to agree with. If I'm Karl Rove you are Rush Limbaugh.
You'll like this though - apparently a big hit from true noble warrior Lucic put Downie out for most of the first period of yesterday's game (bottom of article).

I could give 2 shits. I have seen many Flyers get hurt in the past few years excluding the Hatcher hit and no one cares when they get hurt. Now 1 guy is hurt, oh well. Deal with it, that's what we had to do when our players got taken out with questionable hits. _________________

Bergeron put himself in a vulnerable position. He knew a defenseman would be on his ass when he went in to play the puck and slams on the breaks. He put himself in a bad position, even Scott Stevens agreed. I don't feel it was a bad hit. Similar hits have happened this year and none of them were penalized. _________________

Then I'm sure you'll have a completely logical explanation for the fact that Jones paused, sized up the situation, and then drilled Bergeron...
And if you don't agree that there was a pause... watch the tape... |
