He deserves one.

I think I heard on a telecast the other day that no player has played in more games and has a higher +/- than Lidstrom since he started his career. That likely means he's played a lot more minutes than anyone else too.

He is the only Captain that could soften the blow of Stevie leaving.

Some more stat love:

Difference of Goals for and Goals against on ice/60 minutes. The last number is the difference between goals against and goals that each player is on ice for per 60 minutes of ice time. These are the top players ordered by that number.

Lidstrom and Datsyuk are tops, 9 out of the top 19 are Wings.

Here's the source of the numbers, that last column, the most important once, is the one that I created.

More love: http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=349056

Quote:
Lidstrom, the once unheralded defenseman out of Sweden whom the Red Wings nabbed in the third round, with the 53rd overall pick, in the 1989 Entry Draft, is, for all intents and purposes, the National Hockey League’s vision of perfection.

“He’s the best player,” Babcock said. “No one is as good as him.”

For good reason, too.

No one in the last 20 years of the NHL has been as durable as Lidstrom, who has missed only 22 games throughout his entire career. Lidstrom has fortunately avoided the injury bug that stings even the best in the League.

“My off-season conditioning, the way I take care of myself and prepare, is a big part of it,” Lidstrom told NHL.com. “And, my style. I’m not the physical defenseman looking for the big hit. I’m staying in my position. I know I can take my guy into the boards and neutralize him that way instead of going for the big hit.”

Lidstrom is as good of a positional player as there ever has been in the NHL.

“He doesn’t make mistakes,” Babcock said. “He just doesn’t make any mistakes.”

Not only that, Lidstrom is one of the best skaters in the League.

“I don’t ever remember him getting trapped up the ice,” Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman told NHL.com. “His stats are not as a result of him taking chances, and he’s always playing against the best players. That’s probably what the most unique thing is, he’s had this career playing against the other teams’ best.”

+372 over his career. He probably hasn't gotten nearly as many MVP votes as he should have over the course of his career. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are getting more MVP attention, but Lidstrom deserves that kind of love too.

How can you not appreciate what this guy does? The Norris should just be renamed the Lidstrom - kind of like the America's Cup... Laughing

Datsyuk and Zetterberg wouldn't be getting any MVP love if it wasn't for Lidstrom.

Does that make him the chicken or the egg?

In hockey terms, that makes him the alpha and the omega.

Babcock and Holland think Lidstrom deserves his first Hart trophy:

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080205/SPORTS05/802050400/1053/rss17

Quote:
If Lidstrom wins the Norris Trophy for the sixth time in seven years, it will surprise no one. But Wings coach Mike Babcock and general manager Ken Holland think Lidstrom also should win the Hart Memorial Trophy, given to the league's most valuable player.

Lidstrom leads NHL players with a plus-46 rating. He leads defensemen in scoring with 51 points. The Wings lead the NHL with a 40-10-4 record. Lidstrom is a big reason the Wings rank third on the power play (21.1%) and sixth on the penalty kill (84.7%).

Babcock said after Monday's practice that it's time to begin lobbying for Lidstrom to win the Hart. He said Lidstrom makes his teammates better, specifically his defensive partners; they have included Mathieu Schneider, Andreas Lilja and Danny Markov in the past few seasons, and Brian Rafalski this season.

"When Schneids came here, you play with Nick ... you have the best year of your career," Babcock said. "When Lilja came here, you have a career year. When Markov came here, you have a career year. When Rafalski comes here, you have a career year.

"This team wins all the time. ... And to me, the best player, what he does (is) he makes people around him better. I don't know how you can be the best player in the league if your team doesn't win. That for me is what the best player does, and so I think he's the best player in the league because he does it right. He's the most consistent. You look at the top scoring (defensemen) in the league. I don't know how he cannot be."

Holland said Lidstrom already should have won multiple Hart trophies. Only one defenseman -- Chris Pronger in 2000 with the St. Louis Blues -- has won the Hart since Bobby Orr won the last of three straight in 1972.

"I think I speak on behalf of everyone in our organization: We're baffled why Nick hasn't won," Holland said. "It's one thing to finish second or third. His name is never even mentioned. I think he's the best defensive defenseman. I think he's the best offensive defenseman."

The award is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Why does Holland think Lidstrom has been ignored?

"They're looking for the glitz," Holland said. "Go for the substance. He's not going to wow you. Just look at his minutes. Look at who he's playing against. Look at the stats and look at the standings."

The article also mentions that Holland thinks Datsyuk should get Selke consideration.
