Thursday, January 10, 2008
7:30 p.m. PST
HP Pavilion, San Jose, CA

TV: Fox (local), Pay-per-view (BC)

One team wears blue and green. The other wears aqua. One team displays a whale on its chest. The other displays a shark. One team just got a guy called Beech and has an owner named Aquilini.

Next thing you know, Sebastian the Crab will be the first intermission entertainment.

Storylines:

- the Sharks have owned the Canucks this year, going 3-0 thus far. To be fair, one of those was the most unwinnable game Vancouver has had all year between scheduling and injuries and turned out quite predictably. Both of the others came during the Canucks' stumbling start to the season.

- the Canucks continue their policy of harvesting failed Washington prospects and 1999 first-rounders in picking up Kris "Wreck" Beech off waivers from Columbus. It's unsure whether he'll be in the lineup tonight.

- Joe Thornton is a Canuck-killer. We know this. In 21 career games against Vancouver he's 7-19-26, but has regularly looked dominant since becoming a Shark. I'm looking for a Canuck who's point-per-game all-time against San Jose. Ah, here we are: Kevin Bieksa, with 7 points in 6 games... d'oh!

- the Sharks are 5-0-1 in their last six games. Vancouver has won 4 of its last 5.

- the Sharks are batting .944 when leading after two, and the Canucks are yet to win when trailing after two. So I guess the key for Vancouver is not to fall behind.

- Injuries: For SJ - Alexei Semenov (hand), Ryan Clowe (knee), Brad Norton (back). For VAN - Brendan Morrison (wrist) and Bieksa (leg) as usual, still Mattias Öhlund (post-concussion) though he says he's feeling better, and uncertainty on Jeff Cowan and Brad Isbister. Apparently Nathan McIver was returned to Winnipeg, so at least it seems Alexander Edler is good to stay in the lineup for a bit.

I do NOT have a good feeling about this game at all. No Ohlund or BXA (although I think I read that Cowan was back), Thornton owns Vancouver as much as Gaborik and Sakic have, Nucks PP starting to sputter, and the PK still trying to find its groove. The bigger Sharks have always been tough for Vancouver to handle even with a healthy lineup. Granted San Jose doesn't score nearly as many goals as you would think with that lineup, but they also don't give up many goals either.

3-1 San Jose. Mad

3-1 F. Mad

The Sharks are an excellent team - they'd have a much better record if they didn't have to face Dallas and Anaheim 8 times... They use their size very effectively, give nothing whatsoever (save for about five minutes) to Vancouver, defend a lead as well as anyone, and get timely goals. Sharks go 2 for 7 on the PP; the turning point seemed to be a toothless 5 on 3 early in the first for Vancouver that got nothing going.

I think the injuries to BMo, BXA and Ohlund are now starting to affect Vancouver... That's a lot of experience not to have in your lineup. And they replace it with Weaver, Edler, Jaffray and Raymond. They really haven't looked that sharp for a couple of weeks now.

Oh well, re-group and be ready for the resurgent Coyotes. And I hope they rest Luongo. He did not look good on that 3rd goal.

Yes, the Sharks are the team Vancouver doesn't want to face in the postseason. Not because of the 0-4 record, but because they don't believe they can beat the Sharks (neither does anybody). They just haven't even been remotely close.

That said, if the first two losses hadn't come as part of the season-opening crappy stretch, who knows if they may have put up a better fight. It's chicken-and-egg to be sure (games like those were what made it a season-opening crappy stretch), but there's a consensus that they only really started 'putting it together' mentally later on.

They will. El Viño had already said Luongo wasn't playing both of these. Sanford gets his first start on home ice.

I think the Sharks will give the Wings all they can handle if they can play like they did last night. The Wings might be the class of the West, but the Sharks aren't too far back, especially if they can score as they have been against Vancouver (somehow they don't, though).

I agree that the Nucks probably were mentally beaten even before they took the ice; I think the psychology works the other way, too - the Sharks were probably pretty confident about this game going in. Mad They were head and shoulders the better team last night.

Barring a sudden injury to Lidstrom, I can't see anyone beating Detroit this year. They're competing in a different league than the rest of the NHL... a much, much, better one. Seeing a Red Wings game is like watching the Manitoba Moose play the Dallas Stars.

If anyone beats them, I'd consider it a giant upset. While I generally subscribe to Jyrki's "no upsets" NHL theory, I'd have to make an exception at this point.
