He's making a pit stop to the bar first?

Long but good article about McCarty's attempted comeback, but more importantly how he's been turning his life completely around since last summer and after a meeting in November with someone helping him out a lot - his old buddy Kris Draper.

Good for him, I suppose, but with people in their 30's already and having his problems already tear his family apart you do have a long ways to go to earn that kind of respect back. I've seen plenty of adults who try and change and do, but only temprorarily before reverting back. And often it's not just drugs, it's just in terms of responsibility.

In other words, we'll see if he's still holding it together when his kids are in high school. Then we'll look back and be proud of his coming around.

Yup, he still has a long way to go, but a start is far better than nothing. And the fact that his wife allows him to stay in the house and is really getting involved in his kids' lives is a great thing for him. A lot of people say that it's their kids who keep them grounded, and hopefully it will be the same for Darren.
One quote from Draper gives reason for optimism, that he's reverting back but not in the negative sense:
Quote:
But in November, Draper sensed their friendship reconnecting.

"I said to myself, 'This is the Darren McCarty I used to know,' " Draper said.

It's a very good article and it hits close to home. My brother was a pretty good defenceman playing minor hockey in Kamloops. At 17 years old, he was invited for a tryout with the Merritt Centennials in the BCHL. He was at the time 6'1" 180 lb and a right handed shot. His defensive partner went on to play with Seattle in the WHL. Yet my brother never made it. Like McCarty, he spent all of his time getting baked on weed. He dropped out of school, dropped out of hockey, basically dropped out of society. He dabbled in other, harder drugs but his crutch was always marijuana to escape reality. I hope for McCarty's sake he does make a comeback. He's lucky he has friends like Draper.

Thanks for sharing, Mr. P. I hope that your brother has been able to put his life back together...
