The Caps are in town, and this will be fun to watch. Both the Habs and the Caps were on a roll before the All-Star break, both are highly skilled, and we get a home-and-home to kick off the stretch drive.
Markov has been pretty successful in shutting down Ovechkin in the past.
Should the NHL have a ref that is fluent in Russian out there tonight? _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Komisarek, Begin, Smo, Kosto and Gorges have Ovechkin in lock down. Only swan diver Alex Semin can save the hapless Caps now. Mwahahahaha. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

Oh, I didn't think Bouillon and Gorges had Ovechkin locked down at all. It was clear that was the matchup Bordreau was trying to get, not what Carbo wanted. Whenever Gorges and Bouillon were on the ice, and it went into Montreal's zone, all of a sudden Ovechkin appeared.
They did well preventing quality chances, but Ovechkin kept the pressure on. Those were the only shifts Washington had sustained pressure.
But man... that play by Plekanec on the SH goal was just awesome.
Could this team have any more statement games? The Caps were just as hot as we were, and this one really wasn't close. Think this team has problems at home anymore? _________________ "Oh my God. Defintely a big statement. The Caps had a few chances but we took the lead early and they never really had a chance of coming back.
Kovalev's performance was really incredible, no doubt he wanted to show the young Russian kid a few tricks. It looked like he had broken his thumb, then he went into overdrive, and every shift he was on became a game of keep away. The team is really flowing right now and guys are making crisp, creative passes to each other.
Streit is awesome. Nuff said. Actually I like this 6-man D unit a lot. Gorges and Frankie were no doubt the match up Boudreau was looking for, and I felt they did a great job containing Ovechkin to the outside. Seriously, the guy had zero one-timers, and only one genuine scoring chance that he rang off the crossbar. This is the best player in the league and we clearly frustrated him tonight - as a team. We'll go into D.C. on Thursday and we'll smoke them again.
Let's also give props to Huet, who got his second shutout of the season and earned it. Washington are a dangerous team and the first two periods of the game were wide open with end to end rushes from both teams, and he made a few key saves.
Ryder is really useless. He can't one-timer the puck anymore (how many fackin' chances did he have on the PP today?) and his instincts are all wrong right now. At least Guillaume his going to the net and getting clean scoring chances, even if he's equally as snake-bitten.
I just hope this team doesn't hit full stride too quickly, I want them playing this strong in March. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

Alex Kovalev had a request for the horde of cameras, microphones and notebooks surounding him in the winning dressing room.
"Don't ask me about Ovechkin," said the Russian sniper, whose 22nd goal capped a 4-0 Canadiens win.
"Talk about our team. We played great."
He had a point. The Canadiens got a solid effort from all four lines, the defence was outstanding and Cristobal Huet was brilliant, earning his 15th career shutout with 35 saves.
Ovechkin – OK, we have to talk about him a little – had four shots. But he was controlled in one-on-one situations by Mike Komisarek and Josh Gorges, both of whom contributed to a team defensive effort.
"I know he's scored a lot of goals, but we do our job and it doesn't matter who they have on their team," Kovalev said before he declared a moratorium on Ovechkin assessment.
Kovalev was impressed by Canaadiens' effort in the second period, which has tended to be a team weakness this season.
"We're learning from the past," he said. "We had a good second period, played 60 minutes and it paid off."
Kovalev said he may have sustained a broken thumb, but "I still have four fingers left."
Canadiens scored two power-play goals, one shorthanded and another at even strength. Kovalev said the team has taken "a long journey to get to the point where the guys are more confident with the puck."
"Sometimes we have to dump and chase," he added. "But I see a lot more guys who are comfortable, moving the puck around, making passes and making plays.
"When you have to skate hard for 60 minutes, you can get tired annd make mistakes. If you control the puck 60, 70 per cent of the time, it's definitely a lot easier to play the game." |

Huet is 7-2 with a 1.94 GAA and a .925 SV% in his 9 straight starts here in January. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

In game two of the home-and-home, Ovechkin dominates but a late surge by the Habs leads to a game tying goal by Guillaume Latendresse to send this baby into OT.
This team rules, even if we don't win today. What an effort. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

Ovechkin had one of the best performances I've ever seen, otherwise we walk all over them.
BTW, the Caps are going to win the Southeast. Watch out for AO in the playoffs, baby. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

I saw parts of the first and second periods, and highlights all of the Ovechkin goals. He looked dominant as hell, especially on the first goal. That was a mean helicoptor stick to the face he took by Kovalev. Boullion had a nice hit on him, not that it did a hell of a lot in the grand scheme of things
