Here is an article from August 10, 1990. It is an interview with Steve Yzerman by Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom. The Red Wings after two trips to the Conference Finals and two 1st place finishes in the Norris Division in three years had slipped to last place in the Norris and missed the playoffs. This was also the year that the Red Wings traded popular players Adam Oates and Kris King. At the time Steve Yzerman was widely blamed by Detroit fans and the media for the sudden and unexpected firing of wildly popular head coach Jacques Demers. I remember this time well. I wa stunned when I heard that Demers had been fired. Demers, who felt quite safe in his position and who liked the Detroit community had recently opened a his own restuarant in suburban Detroit called, believe it or not, Jacques Demers. It was located in the Embassy Suites Hotel near I - 696 and US - 10, the Lodge Freeway. Yzerman came under intense fire for this. He sat down, after it happened, with Mitch Albom and gave his side of the story. Here it is, enjoy...
