The playoffs are nearly out of reach for the Blackhawks, but team President John McDonough continues to think big.
Big as in 82.
McDonough is determined to have all 82 Blackhawks games televised next season.
"We're talking to different partners," McDonough said Monday. "We haven't consummated anything, but I'm very confident all of our games will be televised."
As many as 25-30 could go on free, non-cable TV. WGN-Ch. 9, which carried Hawks games in the 1960s and early '70s, and WPWR-Ch. 50 are two possible landing spots.
The Hawks' main TV partner is Comcast SportsNet, which is broadcasting 39 road and 11 home games this season. Another two were on Versus, leaving some 30 untelevised games in Chicago.
Ratings for Hawks games on CSN are about equal to last season's 0.8, with 1 point equal to nearly 35,000 TV homes. ( The Bulls are averaging a 1.8 this season on CSN. The Sox did a 1.3 last season, while the Cubs averaged a 4.2.)
Every other Hawks arrow is pointing up, with ticket sales surging 45 percent over last season and page views on blackhawks.nhl.com up 67 percent.
But one giant piece of the puzzle is missing—all 82 games on the air.
"We want the 20th guy on our roster to have a high profile in Chicago," McDonough said. "The fastest way to accomplish that is through TV." |

I'll reserve my judgment. I thought guys like Golisano and Melnyk were going to be great owners when they first came on board. But so far he's done nothing but the right things.
He's certainly worlds better than his old man was, but that's not saying much. |

One thing I'll give Rocky so far is that he is letting this McDonough guy do his job without interference, and allowing him to be the voice with Rocky being the guy behind the scenes if anything. _________________ "Oh my God. And pulling Pulford out of hockey operations can't be seen as a negative move even if one considers it meddling _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Ah, that's true. Brokering the TV deal and that have definitely been his best moves thus far... |
