I'm a stats whore with lots of time to kill today so here ya go.

It seems to me that there's been an abnormal amount of hat tricks, especially natural hat tricks, this year. I wanted to see whether I was crazy or not. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of resources available for this.

This year through Jan 19th:

Cleaned up this thread a bit.

20 games to go. We need three hat tricks to tie 96-97.

I think Chad LaRose wins the award for "most unlikely hat trick" of the year. Laughing

No way, Corvo for sure.

He's a point man on the PP, that's just a good PP night.

LaRose is a 3rd/4th liner who hardly plays in any offensive situations (except for the obvious one of playing for Carolina).

Corvo without the hat trick: 10 goals, 36 assists.
LaRose without the hat trick: 8 goals, 11 assists.

Good points. Larose missed some time, but that probably doesn't make a difference.

I'd still guess that third-liners getting hat tricks is more common than a defenseman, though...

Vermette scores his first, sending Ottawa fans into yet another debate on whether or not he can become a reliable scorer someday...

And after the Franzen show today, you have any figures for the playoffs?

His was the only one so far this year. Don't know about other years. I'll break out the books one of these days and see what there is.
