Laughing

Leafs fans I'm sure are hoping for another accidental Pronger impregnation.

If he does indeed bolt then he is every bit the slithering opportunist mercenary whose mouth is bigger than his brain.

I actually do hope the Leafs cough up control and big-time money and simply watch the drama unfold.

How is he an opportunist if he leaves the Ducks and ends up being the head of the shit storm in Toronto? That would make him stupid, not an opportunistic mercenary Laughing

While I do think Burke is overrated, I also think the Leafs need a "forcefull" personality like him to work with/against the board of MLSE.

I tend to agree - call him an opportunist but he was smart enough to recognize the positives in those opportunities and get the most out of it. With all those bad NMC-laden contracts, few draft picks to build on, and a media environment that will be relentless, he'd have to be crazy to take this, even at the $ being thrown around... Wait a tic... Maybe that's his angle... Get in, build as-needed - if he's not successful, he still gets paid the big bucks... His rep will take a huge hit, but if anyone can bounce back, BB could.

He wouldn't bolt the Ducks unless it was the perfect situation, meaning he'd be getting a ton of money AND control. I'm sure he'd put it in writing that Peddie isn't to so much as sneeze in his general direction. It's clear Burke thrives when he's knee-deep in a shit storm anyway, all the better for him to draw attention to himself. And hey, I can't entirely blame MLSE for wanting him, if there's anyone who's going to make life miserable for these guys who don't want to drop their NT/NMC's, it's him.

Let's also keep in mind that the Ducks might be a sinking ship...Burke's jumping off now before his stellar rep gets tarnished. If he flops in Toranna there's plenty of people around to blame at least. In Anaheim the burden would be his and his alone.

Seems to me like Burke would make a better MP than a GM. Just saying.

The "opportunistism" in going to Toronto is simple... he'll make a hell of a lot of money. He's jumped from Vancouver to Anaheim, won a Cup, and now he's looking to really cash in. His wife can climb the media ladder of Toronto and make a lot more money as well. Moving to Toronto isn't about winning, it's about money.

Yeah in T.O. spending to the cap there is really only one direction left to go in.

Yup. I was talking in terms of assets and building a winning team, not in terms of what he'd be paid.

I still think the job should go to Glenn Healy.

I'm sure he could do just as good a job as Burke & for 1/4 of the expense.

I have nothing to back that assertion, just a gut feeling.

What would be funny is if the Leafs actually kept Cliffy in charge or even better, hired some glorified patsy they could easily fire the next year, all for the purpose of wasting an entire year so they can get Burke. I certainly wouldn't put it past MLSE, they're that stupid.

As long as said GM doesn't have any leash to do anything to improve the team and they tank for a year, that will work. Mad

Yep take a year off and cut a good ten million from the payroll this off season if you can. Let the team suck continue to move vets for youth get a high pick and tell the board there is your extra ten million in place of revenue so kindly screw off and leave us alone.

Now if the fans where to stop coming out then this plan would be in jeopardy, but I'm confident they would bitch and moan but still pay anyway.

It won't be because it's all suits filling the ACC...

The problem being that if they pare $10 million off of the payroll in order to tank, even though the fans want them to tank they will still talk about signing everyone to spend to the max amount...

As a fanbase we Leafs talk about signing everyone even when capped out.

My only pity will be that 80% of all UFA out there that dream of being a Maple Leaf and know we could pay them under the cap but still have to "settle" for signing somewhere else because we are rebuilding.
