From game one of the Traverse City tourney.

— Why doesn't the NHL Network show these games live? Is there a good reason to tape delay their coverage for a day or two?
— Cory Emmerton was the first star of the game (4-0 win over Rangers) with two goals and an assist. He outraced a New York defenseman to a loose puck in the Rangers' zone with enough speed that the defender fell. That led to a centering pass and a Zack Torquato slam for a 3-0 lead late in the second period.
— Justin Abdelkader and Sergei Kolosov were teh two most physical players on the ice. Both had at least two big hits.
— Goalie Daniel Larsson looked very good in his North American debut. Very quick and in control.
— Here's my new favorite player ... Jordan Foreman. When a Rangers player was bent over the boards along the Wings' bench, Foreman delayed the opponent's return to the action by subtly holding the Rangers' sleeve. Love that Slap Shot stuff.
— Thomas McCollum had a couple of sparkling saves in relief of Larsson.
— Mattias Ritola looks more confident and sharper than he did at camp last fall. |

Although it didn't show on the scoresheet, Justin Abdelkader was a force for the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night in Traverse City, Mich.
The 6-foot-1, 209-pound left-winger's big hits and sound defensive game energized his team from start to finish in a 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Center Ice Arena on opening night of the annual prospects tournament.
"I wanted to get the tempo up," Abdelkader said. "I like to throw the body around. I wanted to get the guys energized and inspired."
Playing on a line with rookie pro Jan Mursak and skilled Swede Mattias Ritola, the trio played well and showed instant chemistry.
"Mursak and Rittola are good unselfish players and I thought we jelled," Abdelkader said. "We just wanted to come out and play hard and play fast"
His performance Saturday was nothing new. The Muskegon, Mich., native has developed steadily for the past three seasons with the Michigan State Spartans, making a name for himself when he scored the championship-winning goal against Boston College in 2006 and picking up Frozen Four MVP.
"I think Justin plays the same (style of game) all the time," Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said." He plays hard, takes the man and plays physical. He just plays a good solid all-around game." |
I really liked what I saw from him in his brief stint with the Wings at the end of last season. It'd be awesome to see he and Helm make things really difficult for the Wings brass at training camp, but as it always is with the Wings, they'll see 20 minutes a night in the minors instead of 5 at the NHL level that the wily vets will get instead. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Johan Ryno, a massive Swedish winger with skills, will be staying in Sweden for another year after heading home last year after only 12 games with Grand Rapids.

Ryno, a fifth-round pick (No. 137) in 2005, was uncomfortable with the North American game and North American ice, but at 6-foot-5 he's definitely a prospect for the Wings. He'll return to Sweden for another year.
"He's a big kid with good size," Nill said. "He just wasn't comfortable in North America yet. We're going to leave him in Sweden and see if he can get his game going over there and then bring him over here. He's got a chance with skills to be a second-line guy, but it will depend on development." |
I was really hoping for him to come over for camp this year, but that's not going to happen. He's still on the team's radar though.
The link above has some info on a bunch of the Wings' best prospects. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
